Hello, I am new to the forums and new to 4Runners. I have just started looking for a 4runner. I don't know alot about them and I was hoping someone could help guide me. I don't want to spend a ton of money at least not on the truck alone. I want something I can modify my self. I do know that I want something around a 1993. I found one for sale but the guy wants a ton of money for it. I will add 2 pics of it because this is how I would like mine to sit. Maybe you can guys can tell me what all need to be done to get to this point, also I am looking for suggestions on what years to avoid/ pros and cons of one year to the next.

Holy mother of God, what a monster! I'd be scared with a lift that big that I'd flip around a turn. Looks badass though.

well this would be more of a weekend warrior for me, I have an EVO as my daily driver and a 900 hp awd talon to play with. I just want something I can take off road and go camping with.

There is not a doubt in my mind that you will be able to go off roading or camping with that rig. What is the seller asking for it?

Evan

If you like that truck make him a low ball offer and let him sit on it. It won't be a quick seller unless the right buyer comes along.

Some people think they will get every $ out of something like that , that they have put in. Ain't gonna happen !!!

Well another thing I don't like bout that one is the fact that it has a chevy V8 in it. The guy wants like 10,000 for it and that more than I want to spend. I tried looking for some lift kits for the 2nd gen 4runners but all I could find was some 4" kits. Where can I find the good stuff.

I don't know that the Chevy conversion is such a bad thing. The V6 of that era was not one of Toyota's better engines. Depending on the quality of workmanship, age of the engine and driveline upgrade etc it might be a deal if he'd take mid-high $8k.

To get 4"+ without going crazy you'll probably need to do 3" and a body lift to get your total lift to 4" or so. When I say 'crazy' I mean this guy did.

Those trucks you are looking at both have a SAS or SAC Meaning solid axle swap or solid axle conversion. The best thing you can do to those for any kinda of harder wheeling. If done right the road manners should be ok. The v8 swap is a plus to turn those tires and gearing helps also. What kind of wheeling do you want to do?? The IFS is junk really for any trails above a 3. Although we have guys that wheel pretty hard with the ifs still and are getting quick at fixing the junk on the trail...LOL

If you just want something for light wheeling and getting to remote ares for camping then one of these might not be your best bet. But if you want a good wheeler out of the box then yes...people want a arm and a leg for them. But they are also taking a heavy loss for the amount of money they have put in them. I would never sell my 91 P/U because of the time and money that I would never get back...LOL

What is IFS?

Independant Front Suspension = IFS

The white one on Ebay looks good. That's high mileage for the V6 unless it's had a rebuild. Those V6's eat head gaskets and with those mods you're working the heck out of a marginal engine. With the gearing mods it would be great off-road but on road a pig.

As Bowtie3 said, the V8 is almost 'required' to make it drive well.

how hard is it to put a v8 in one of these things? Do they make a conversion kit or is it all custom motor mounts, etc

I have no personal experience. I do know that there are some kits for the Chevy. They may still require some custom work too, I don't know.

I have always thought a 4.3L V6 Chevy might be a neat choice. Good power, cheap, parts are Chevy 350 parts, less weight, not so powerful that you'd be having regular driveline failures etc.

You're welcome here and I encourage you to stay here but if I were you I might look at some of the Toyota pick-up forums etc for the older trucks (same as a 2nd gen). Some of those guys are engine swap/mod crazy!

Ok thanks any forum in particular? I was thinking that if I got one with the V6 maybe I could swap in a V8 from a land cruiser to keep it all toyota. Also what axles do you use when converting to solid axles in the front?

I think it's actually easier to go Chevy than Toyota on the V8... Try TTORA.

damn that is exactly how I want to lift my 2005 4r. Why oh why must it be so difficult.

Go for the red one...super sick head turner there. You probably want the chevy v8 for extra power for those tires. But be aware of the maintenance you might have to keep up with or pay for.

One day I will get my 4R up there.
