Hello to all. Im new in this forum i have a 93 4runner and I have a bit of a problem with the engine. It has driven fine for the time ive oned the truck it has a litle over 200k milles. As i drive it on monday i started hering a noice that sounded lile mettal was hitting then the truck shut off. She never over heted and fluids are all up to standard. NOw if i turn it on it makes the noice if i reb the engine hi but the noice gows away if its in idel. I live in california orange county. Is their any toyota place that some one in my area has taken their vihecle to so i can have it checked out. I do most of my mechanic work but this is out of my confort sone. Any help at all will be greatly apreshiated.

that sounds a bit odd. Does the engine sound normal when you try to crank it? I wonder if a rod bearing or main bearing went. if the noise is constant or gets louder as you rev it, it could be a bearing that went.

Hello again. Well the sound only comes wen the truck is reved hi then it quiayets down at idel but the noice is still their realy low. The truck was running fine like I had said but it turned off on me I poped the clutch and it started right up but it had that noise. The truck had resently had the timing belt and whater pump done. Say it is one of the bearing balpark how much am i looking at to fix my baby.

It sounds like your timing chain guide may have failed you... Can you tell what area of the engine it's coming from?

Is it a 22re or a 3.0?

Im not sure the engine code but its a v6. It sounds like its on top closer to the front of the engine, and like I said it's only notisable wen the truck is reved hi. Wen i step on the gas it makes the noice wen I let go of it, it cuayets down. How can I check what spacific engine I have in case I need to buy parts. I have the repair book as well. Thanks for the help.

If it's a '93 4Runner in the USA it's the 3.0 v6.

As far as the engine code goes, look in the driver door jam, it will say there.

ok thanks. it is a 3.0 and is the code numbers or letters or is it a combination of the two? I realy apresiate the help considering its the first engine i ever have a problem like this.

you have the 3VZ engine. It might help if you took a phone or video camera to the noise, record it and post it on youtube for us to hear. Sound is like taste, it's hard to describe at times and everyone has a different definition.

oh ok, ill do that tomorow and ill try to up lode it into youtube. i also have the book to the truck like i said befor so anithyng will help. thank you all for ur help.

The 3VZE does not have a timing chain, so the guide issue is out.

It sounds to me like something is starving for oil at high revs, making me suspect a faulty oil pump, a large amount of oil sledge, the wrong weight of oil, or oil that is too old.

It may be worth having a shop do an test on your oil pressure. The dash gauge is not very accurate.

oh cool ill do that. what i noticed is that the heds have a smal leak not bad but its their. I will have the mechanic check that today wen he come and check the truck out. Is their anithyng eals i should have him check wile hes here to make sure all the points are coverd. Thanks for the help to all.

are you using the correct type of gas?? sounds like it could possiably be engine knock. the reason it goes away is bc at idle if it is dected the obc will re**** timing untill it goes away. so what type of gas are you using?

i use 76 regular and i put once a month a gas treatment. I had the timing belt done about 2thousand milles ago and a fresh whater pump as weel.

hello every one. Just an update the first mechanic i had the truck look by has ruled that the noise is a bering at the block. He said the heds are good and i would need to rebuild the bottom half. iIm taking it to a second mechanic to have a second opinion if they both say the same thing ill start looking for parts and prices on the work. ill update tomorow

i know you found the problem but i just wanna give my opinion on the gas you are using. persionaly i would not go any lover than 83. that is what toyota recomends. i use 83 and octane booster every 5 fill-ups. if i were you i would tru to use higher octane gas before you start having problems.

I had ment that the brand i use is 76 the grade i use is 89. I have found the problem like i had said but my question is should i rebuild my engine or should i find a jdm 30k mille engine.

if yours has high milleage you might be better going with a jdm

Thanks for all the input too all. I have been looking for a Jdm engine but all the places i call are ether used engines or rebuilds. If any one has a number or a web site wer i can get a jdm let me know cuss if not i think i should just re build my engine. They have quoted me 100 to turn and polish my crank and also I getthe berings. I was told by the mechanick that is wen i pull the engine out that i should be abol to see is i need to do the hole thing or just the crank. Like always any input from any one is great. thanks for all the help.

Hello to all. I have found a place that will machine my crank and suply me with the right berings for under 100$ is that a good deal or is it to cheep to be a good deal. Like i had said in my previous post i have yet to frnd a jdm engine that is not rebuild for under 1500$. Sould I bore the engine as well or just stick the freshly worked on crank? I have never done this so if my question is stupid sorry for the question.
