Hello, Im obviously am new here. Im not a mechanic by any means, but I can do lots of my own work on my 80 jeep cj. I frequent a jeep forum similar to this one. They have been awesome helping me with that project. But anyways...
My son was just given a 96 with a 2.7L. It has an automatic transmission and 255K miles on it. When we got it, we were told by the PO that the radiator was broken. The PO drove it to our house, about 15 miles, with no water at all. It was dropped off at our house and my son was told he could have it if he wants it. PO bought a new car. Didnt think it was worth anything.
I looked under the hood for the first time in my driveway. The "broken radiator" was a blown upper radiator hose. It was fixed in 5 min. We added coolant and it seems to be ok. Should I be worried about a blown head gasket, and if so, how do I check for that?
The only other thing that is wrong, other than needing lots of TLC, is the power steering doesnt work. It was bone dry. I added fluid. It worked for a while. It seems to have a leak, but I can see where it is leaking, and I dont see evidence of it on the driveway. Any ideas on this one? I know its not much info.
I think the oil was changed about every 8-10K miles. Everything looks to be original toyota under the hood. Engine seems to be fairly strong for its miles. Body is in good shape. Interior just needs to be cleaned. Not bad for 15 years old. Im impressed with the Toyota quality.
My son is excited to have a free car. It needs new tires. I doubt the timing chain has been replaced. It needs a tune up, fluids changed...etc. So how long to these 2.7L 4cyl last. I look forward to learning a lot about these 4runners. He is excited to do as much work as he can on this himself.
Thanks.
