USNavyOrdnance is on a distinguished road Hello from SoCal, 90 SR5 4Runner 4x4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello ya'll from Lakeside,Ca. (San Diego). Active duty Navy here I just acquired this 1990 4runner SR5 4x4 with the 3.0 and auto trans. She's been sitting in storage for 10+ years and hasn't been started in 5+ years. She has 212k miles and turns over so that's a good sign thus farI guess... Lol. Fluids look good with no bad signs but I can tell that the rad had a leak. Gotta put a new rad in. I plan on doing a full rebuild/overhaul once I get her started and know what she's up to. Flush all the fluids then tear her down. I'm a gear head and very mechanically inclined. I own/operate LZ Custom Cycles as a side gig and have built several rigs from Harley's to a 1ton K5. My current off-road rig is a built 99 Disco 1. Same situation with that rig, brought her back from the dead. This is my first time building a Yota so I'm looking forward to it. Firm believer of an engine is an engine.... Just gotta get use to the Yota terminology and location of all the relays and what not. I already printed out the manual (we get them for free on base) and have studied it up some. I plan on bringing her back to life and building her up more mechanically and cosmetically (making a rack and bumpers) then giving it to my Son who will be driving next year.

With that out of the way, maybe you guys can guide me in the right direction. Already did the searches but still like to ask directly. Please bare with me...

The rig turns over beautifully, has spark(double checked coil and each individual wire for spark), has fresh fuel, pump kicks on and works(tried jumper method with paper clip and verified thru cold start valve and at throttle body) and timing belt is not snapped. Checked all the fuses and reseated all the relays(even heater/ac relays) and still no start up. Not even with starting fluid! Seems to me like I may have a bad COR or ECM? Has a fresh battery and fuel. I did have to wire in a new ignition switch as the old one was broken but it went in with no issues. Has all the proper indents and acc, on and start. Dash lights come on as they should when in on position and stay on when attempting to start as they did before. Other than the relays or ECM, I'm at a loss. Any Yota guy suggestions? Thanks in advance.

First off, Thank you for your service to our country! Second, Welcome to the forum! Now I am not the greatest person when it comes to terminology I am unfamiliar with COR. Now are your sure the timing belt has not jumped a couple teeth? Maybe a rat has chewed a wire somewhere, or even it needs fresh spark plugs

Thanks as well for the service. I would start with basics as it seems you have. A simple timing belt being broken check is to pull off the distributor cap and watch the rotor as someone else tries and starts it. It should spin all day long. I have seen one of these, it was a truck but still exact same engine with perfect maintenance, shear off about 3 teeth on the distributor shaft so anything is possible.
If it were me, I wouldn't use much time on that engine. They are overall not that well liked...I used to have it in mine. Went thru all the hoops to convert to next generation V6 and I will never regret that swap. Takes time and money, but worth it all if you love the vehicle.
Anyhow, check out the distributor trick and see what you get. The distributor in those has both "cam" and "crank" sensors so if either one took a dump you wouldn't be running.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Sorry for the late response Gents. Was on leave in Texas. While there I picked up a ecu, all relays including a COR, a coolant resoivor and some other odds and ends from a running 4runner that was being parted out. All those things for $30! Way cheaper than Rover parts(I aLso have a built Disco).

Swapped out the fuel pump relay, COR, ecu and still no start. Feels like she wants to but nothing... I pulled distributor and not busted teeth or abnormalities. Reset timing to factory specs too. I'm not getting any flashing check engine light, just stays on when cranking. I replaced the wire going from the battery to the fuse box as I read that might be the issue. No start but cranked better. Does the exact same thing with relays/ecu from parts rig and the original relays/ecu. Still have Spark and fuel! No bang tho! I'm at a loss...

I did notice I do have a little bit of oil in the intake/throttle body. My guess is the intake manifold has a leak. I might just bite the bullet and tear it down now before trying to start it as I like to usually do to gauge what I'm getting into.
