So the wifey's 2002 Sport started making noise in the rear that I am 99% sure is the axle bearings. She has 300+K miles on it so I am not completely surprised. The only issue is that her axle housing is in super bad shape so I found an empty clean mint one on eBay from Arizona for $450. Ordered all the parts including new brake backing plates. Probably going to start on it this weekend.

We'll be watching! make sure you do the sharpie test with the oil seals at the outer ends of the axle. That is important to get it right. I did once without the sharpie test and failed! then 2nd round with the sharpie test and pass! Thanks tim for his work!

looks like fun. Do you have a press do do your own bearings ? If so not only the sharpy test but flip the retainer as shown in one of timmys videos. As far as the third memeber ( pumpkin) doing anything with that ?

I only ever had one rear axle housing that shiny.. It came from CA. Did you get replacement abs sensors too.. As if your rear abs were never removed before the chance of them coming up in one piece and good are about 5%. :-(

Looks like a good project. As long as your 3rd member was not ran out of gear oil or super low for a long time, you should be good.

I should take some photos of one that is damaged. So you can see the ring gear and pinon wear so you know what to look for. In good ones, mostly you can still see the machining marks on the teeth and they are not super shiny from wear. Once you see what I am talking about. You understand.. The pinion bearing is mostly the first thing to super wear when they are driven 99% on the road because the low gear grease cooks that bearing and then the alignment goes out of wack causing the pinon gear and ring gear damage..

Brillo_76 I didn't really mess with the third member much. Just cleaned the gasket surface up as it got a little dinged up from trying to free it from the housing. There wasn't a whole lot of gear oil in it so I don't know how it is going to play out once I get it all back together. It must have been leaking much worse than I though through the rusted housing. Both bearings were toast on the axles. Time will tell if I am going to also need a pumpkin too?????

I did buy the Harbor Freight press as it was on sale right when the bearings went south. I have watched Timmy's videos a bunch of times. I also bought Duane's special tool that Timmy talks about. Absolute life saver and a great buy. You really couldn't do this job without it.
