new trannie for 2001 4runner question

My 01 needs a new tranny and the mechanic is telling me that I need to replace the torque converter as well. Unfortunately, I have recently moved and do not know this mechanic at all so I don't trust him. My 01 has 125k miles on it and this is the first time it has ever had a problem. They are telling me that a used tranny will cost 2800 plus a new radiator and a torque converter. My wife thinks I am crazy to put that much money into this but I tell her that it still has plenty of life left. Am I crazy? Should I just try to trade it in?

I moved this to the 3rd gen. sub-forum. I think you will get more response here. This is the first time I have heard about a transmission failure in the 3rd gen. I wonder the heck happened. I flush my transmission but I tow a good bit.

As far as fixing it, sure it makes sense. You have a $8,000 rig, spending $3500 or so makes sense. It sure hurts, but it makes sense. You may check with other mechanics and see what is best for you.

the reason for the torque converter and radiator change is because they have trans fluid in them, which means if you have contaminants in the fluid from the damaged trans, it most likely will cause the new transmission to fail as well. It is almost impossible to even get all of the fluid out of a torque converter w/out cutting it open.

There are two other options for the radiator swap. Honda will install an inline filter to catch anything from going back into the new trans when they do an install at the dealership. Other option would be to just install an aftermarket trans cooler in place of the internal one in the radiator. This may not save much money, but would offer better cooling for the new trans.

In short if the trans is the problem, your new mechanic is 100% right in his recommendations regarding the torque converter and radiator.
