I got my 04 SR5 Sport V6 on Friday. It’s a lovely truck; drives smoothly, comfortable and looks nice. I’ll try to go mild off-roading this weekend to see how it performs. I read the manual few times and boy does it suck big time. From a person who doesn’t know much about cars (and coming for a tinny little civic si), not to mention awd, it’s confusing and doesn’t explain the system well. Thanks to Thai and his posts, I somewhat understand it now. Are there any sites that explain the 03-04 awd systems in more detail?
Thank

you have the v6 4wd and not a v6 awd (diff system)

your options are:

2wd (gear 1-4)
4wd hi (gear 1-4)
4wd lo (gear 1-4)

therefore you have 3 options, 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo. obviously the 4lo is only used for extreme cases i.e. over rocks n stuff.

awd systems only come w/ 4wd hi (hope this clears ya up).

Thanx Goodtimes

Thanks for the above explanation. I have seen the words AWD and 4WD used so interchangeably on this server and was starting to get confused as to what I really had. If I read you right the SR5 and Sport have a traditional switchable 2WD -> 4WD system while the limited has a "full-time 4WD". Thanks again.

actually the v6 model is a part time 4x4 system. This means that you have the option of running either 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo.

the v8 model is a fulltime 4x4 system which means no 2hi (only 4hi and 4lo)

hope this clears things up..

awd is usually 4hi only (but i think it comes in 2hi and 4hi as well)
