New User intro and Question on 4th Gen Limited

Greetings Everyone!

My name is Tom and I'm from Oregon. The wife and I are looking to buy a used Toyota 4Runner for a family rig. I was hoping to gather some advice from fellow enthusiasts.

We found a nice looking black 2006 Limited with the 4.7L V8 with 39000+ mi. It's at a dealer nearby and they purchased from auction. I ran a carfax on it and it came up as a one owner vehicle from New York state. Oddly, they have two prices listed on separate auto advertising sites. $24,877 and $26,877? Strange.

Should I be concerned that it's from the East Coast? Also, what are thoughts on this year vehicle with engine/trans combination? Any known issues with these? Normally, I wouldn't waste people's time and search the forums. But with a new baby, work and a crazy schedule, time has been very sparse.

Anyhow, thanks for reading this and I look forward to being a fellow 4Runner owner and enthusiast. Any help is much appreciated.

I have a 2003 Sport with over 125,000 miles on my V8 and haven't had any problems what so ever with the drive train. And as far as the east coast goes just look for any signs of rust on the under carriage. I doubt you will find any major problems.

The 2UZ-FE V8 is one of the most bulletproof engines Toyota ever made and so is the A750F transmission they paired it with. They are straight from the Land Cruiser which is the most overbuilt/over engineered car on the road.

Thanks for the feedback and info. I forgot to mention that the vehicle is out of warranty and not certified pre-owned. Of course they will offer a warranty for a fee.
 
I was originally looking for a black one but could find one close enough, im jealous. Post pictures if you buy :cheers:
 
I am not normally a me-too poster, but I relax that rule for today...

I have a 2008 V8 Limited...but does not have 40k miles on it...so far I can say it is one of the better SUV's I've ever owned. Smooth power, very nice ride, and my pseudo-AWD version drives like a champ. Not going to win any drag races, but then again, that is not its intended use.

As to Toyota's 4.7L V8, I *do* have another one of those in a 2000 Tundra that has nearly 150k miles on it now, and it is still just fine. I tow with it, heavy loads up to and on top of its 7200# rating, no probs. Engine still purrs, burns no oil (I did change it over to Mobil 1 synthetic after break-in) and has had no issues whatsoever. That particular rig has gone through some oxygen sensors, no biggie - $100 O2 sensor, some anti-sieze grease, a wrench and 5 minutes every 18 months is an easy repair schedule. And I did the recommended timing chain replacement at 80k miles or whatever the interval was...As long as the asking price is fair for the market, and the vehicle is in decent to good shape, I couldn't do anything but recommend it.
 
I bought my 05' with 52k miles in the summer of 07'. It was from New Jersey. One owner, dark blue. Chances of some road salt rust underneath? Yeah, probably, but nothing to even marginally worry about. The only area that required some attention were the bolts holding up the protective plate under the engine. I tried to take one off to get to the transfer case several months ago, and it sheered off. I simply replaced them for $20 from the dealership, and no problems since then. They're not the best bolts in the world either, so it's not like it wouldn't happen anyway probably. No rust on the body at all, no signs of trouble anywhere "and i've been all over, top/bottom/over/under that car" since I bought it "I do my own service". You should be good.

My current Lexus (GS430) is an 01' model, Chicago car the entire time. I bought it recently when we moved from NC to Chicago to save my butt from the horrible roads here in my then Mazda 3GT. The only area that has rust from the winter conditions is a tiny little strip under the rear spoiler. Same kind of rust on a few bolts underneath, no biggie. No body rust anywhere, no problems.

Toyota uses the best metals to build their cars. They last, they stand up to the worst of the worst conditions, and they just keep on going like no other. I've got the V8 as well, perm 4x4. I love it, have trusted it to drive me and my family back and forth to Carolina several times, and will trust it again in a few weeks to drive to Oklahoma in it.

My former car, a 95' Lexus LS400, which I sold in 2007 with 130k+ miles, was so flawless, the senior tech at the local lexus dealership actually bought it from me for his daughter.

All 3 toyota cars I've had, have all been the V8, and every one has been perfect. They're so good actually, that I won't waste my money on the depreciation hits associated with a new car, and just buy used instead.

I think the gray that Toyota uses looks good too! I looked at a Mica Gray Sport. It was very nice. Yours looks very sharp too!
 
i purchased an '05 limited v6 in January. It was japanese born and tarheel bred. I'm hoping it will be tarheel dead. Had 52k on her and she just turned 60. i've driven to the mountains after a pretty bad snow (for NC) storm doing 60+ on the unplowed interstate, taken her off-road a few times and driven around the beaches of the outer banks...in the 8k i've had her, no problems as of yet. I do my own maintenance except for the stuff that would take me 3+ hours of intense labor w/o proper tools and she drives like a dream. this is my first true 4wd vehicle (had a real-time 4wd crv before) and i can't really describe the love I have for it. if its not from the northeast or a beach town it will be golden, jerry!

i paid about 19k...go for it! you will not regret it unless gas gets to $20 /gallon
 
if you havent done so already, drive it! that will be enough for you to decide to buy it. good power & handling, smooth running, im glad i have one. dont worry if its from the east. good luck & let us know what you decide

Hey Tom, I bought my 4runner in Oregon in September of '08. It was certified Pre Owned, and had 23k miles for an '05 V8 Sport. I drove it down to SoCal where I'm stationed and took it back up to Portland for leave last December. The thing was a beast in the snow. I rented chains for the "mando chains entering Metro Area" but I never needed them. I never got stuck and was able to go where others couldn't. I am very happy with my purchase.

About the runner being from the East, yes check for rust. I was stationed in DC for 6 years and dealers offered the anti rust spray for like some overpriced fee. Not everyone opted for that. I asked about that when I bought mine, and it was documented as already complied with. I am very happy with buying Cert Pre Owned. I won't buy new after this experience. I have a warranty and get free oil changes when I vacation to Portland. That helps when I'm on the go.

I planned on towing my motorcycle to Portland in the summer to ride, so I went with the V8. Driving back and forth from Miramar to Camp Pendleton on the weekdays, sometimes I wish I could turn off the all time 4wheel. Thats the Libral gas-saving Oregonian in me. I just keep telling myself that I had good excuses, the towing, driving through REAL moutains. My Focus never would have made it to Portland last December :P

My buddy (another Oregonian) has an 08 V6 Sport and throws his fuel economy, selectable 4wheel drive in my face every chance he gets. Would he be my best friend if he didn't pray on my one partial regret? We used his 4runners back in DC, in the snow all the time. He had a 99 before the current 4th Gen. V8 or V6 this breed of SUV has proven itself to me time and time again. I couldn't be happier.

Great read. Thanks for the info! Are you from Portland originally? We're in Salem. This last Winter ice storm was a lot of fun, let me tell ya! :nono: I hit some black ice coming off of I-5 onto South Commercial and rolled/totaled my 2001 F350. Not fun.

Buy a 4runner, Go Ducks!

Salem, yeah when I was driving up with the Fiancee we hit the really bad stuff around Enchanted Forest. There was a semi-truck balancing on the highway divider. We rented some chains in Redding CA on our way up. I wasn't sure what to expect with my new rig and the weather. Never ended up using the chains.

Are you a Ducks fan? Since you are in Salem I have to assume the worst, a Beaver...
 
Chances are the dealership looked over the car at auction to determine if they wanted to take it on to their lot. If there was serious rust, they'd of probably passed. Rust buckets usually go to lower quality dealerships. Plus, the 4runner is built in Toyota's Japan plants, and they use probably the best steel money can buy. As I mentioned in my earlier post, my 05' that I bought from a Porsche dealer in Raleigh, with 53k miles, was from NJ. The only "winter" related issue I had were a couple of crappy bolts used on the skid pads under the car. That's it. My 01' GS (also built in Japan) has been here in Chicago it's entire life...the only area of rust is a tiny metal strip on the underside of the spoiler - an area that collects water and drips, impossible for a normal carwash to spray off. That's it.

I wouldn't worry about rust on an 06' 4runner from New York being sold at a reputable Toyota dealership.
