new user, new owner... a few questions

Hey everybody. I recently purchased a 97 4Runner SR5 4x4 with 235k miles on it. I've never had a 4Runner before, so I'm pretty excited about it!

The previous owner took good care of it, but pretty much didn't do any service besides oil changes for the last 100k miles. A family member of his owned it before that, so he wasn't sure when things like the timing belt were done.

He just put on new tires, new battery, and replaced the alternator belt (because it broke). So... what do I need to have done to ensure it goes another 100k miles?

Another question I have is about oil. The previous owner always changed the oil himself every 5k miles and always used Mobile 1. I'm normally a quick lube kind of guy (sorry, I'm sure that pains most of you)... so I'm wondering if I should learn to do it myself... just take it to the quick lube and don't worry about it.... or what.

The clock in the dash is gone, so there's just a hole there now. Can I get a new one somewhere, or do you have any suggestions on what I can put in its place?

Floor mats.... There are no floor mats. Any suggestions on good (reasonably priced) rubber/vinyl all-weather floor mats?

It has an original Toyota brush guard that could really use a coat of paint. Any suggestions on what to use for this? I've heard you can get the truck-liner stuff in a spray can, and I thought that might be cool. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome, you will get flamed about using quick lube, if I can't fit in getting mine done I at least take it to a reputable shop.

I would have all the belts checked to make sure they are in good shape.

I would also check the coolant to make sure it hasn't been mixed with both Toyota red and aftermarket green. Either should be fine but just don't mix.

I may have an extra clock from when I changed the face plate in mine, Let me check and get back with you, otherwise a salvage yard should have them pretty cheap.

Any floor mat is fine, personal preference.

I would think twice about keeping the brush guard as they typically create more damage in a wreck, than they will ever save you.

You can still buy original floor mats or you can get some all weather ones.

WeatherTech floor mats will fit a little better, but are also more expensive. Husky floor mats also work well.

check all fluids

it would likely be wise to flush both differentials and refill with synthetics.

Your mileage is right up there and if the maintenance history is spotty then be sure all the fluids are fresh and clean.

Auto transmission or manual? either one uses fluids that should be changed on a regular basis to ensure longevity.

I would read up on rear axle seal breathers and be sure yours is functioning properly or just replace and/or extend at same time. Some folks have suggested these can extend the life of your rear axle seals which can make a mess of your rear braking system.

By now you should have had 4 timing belt changes (60K for the 3.4V6 early) and they generally are done with water pumps changed out at same time. If you have not yet had a water pump changed it is certainly due.

Good time to do the belts and hoses, when in doubt just replace them and keep your old ones for spares.

take your mobil1 to the dealership and pay them the money you would pay a Quickie lube. It will be getting done right and they often will wash it for free. Buy a case of filters when on sale and then all Yota parts can be used with your provided premium oil. Provide 6 quarts and don't expect to get any back.

Brake fluid, clutch fluid, power steering fluid, coolant... think of every fluid and have it replaced. Keep your records and have them all checked on a regular basis.

$18 I think it is

yep that is what I do. Take my own Yota filter and Mobil 1 and their labor is like $18 or so here in the big city.

They almost always point out some maintenance issue that I am overlooking-like power steering flush for example.

Then I go online and find out how to do that myself and save money.

We will have you trained in no time my good man.

:awais:

I will echo against the brush guards. I also inherited my ride recently with 130K on it and slowly getting everything back on track.

Been in an accident with the brush guards and they are a pain if hit because the body needed some slight work in the front. As a result I've taken off both the front and back ones.
