New user questions...

So Im a new member here and a new 4Runner owner as of yesterday. Just bought a used 2004 4Runner Limited V6 with 79k miles on it. I just had a couple questions regarding the car...

1. I noticed that when braking that it seems to bump/chatter through the braking, almost like there is a dead spot in the breaking. Is this normal for the car? If not I am assuming that the rotors are probably bad. However, the car does not shake at all and the braking seems good otherwise.

2. I noticed that sometimes when taking off from a stop, that the car seems to jolt forward slightly after letting of the brake and starting to accelerate. It doesnt happen every time. Whats up with that?

3. The Avg. MPG I am getting according to the computer while driving on the interstate is around 19. Does that seem right I know that I had read that most users were getting around 21-22 MPG while on the interstate. If this is accurate what can I do to improve MPG in the car?

Thanks to all that can help with any of these questions. I already tried searching the forum for any answers but couldnet really find any answers regarding the exact same questions.

I would have your brakes inspected for a sticking caliper or severely corroded rotors/pads. Have the driveshafts & u-joints greased. 19mpg is ok with winter blend E10 gas. Clean your MAF sensor and remove the HCF if you have one.

Thanks for the response.

What is/does HCF stand for?

HCF= Hydro Carbon Filter, take the stock filter box top off, and you will see a black meshy kinda filter, take it out. May help a little. Last week I took mine out and placed a K&N drop in filter in. MPG did increase slighlty.

Grease driveshafts etc for the brake bump feel. Also after driving go feel the wheels, see if one feels hotter than others. Then you will know if a caliper is sticking.

The HCF Does nothing but make you feel good. I have mine on after reading dynos and such proving NO power improvement. The fact is it's over such a huge area compared to the 3" pipe that the intake condenses down into that it's just not a big deal. There's plenty of airflow there.

1. You may have a hot spot on the rotors. I'd replace the fronts and see if that helps.

2. I've never noticed this in my V6

3. You should probably do the spark plugs... not hard. The plugs are 30k mile and probably have never been done in that truck. Check the air filter as well. I'm seeing 19.4 on mine with mixed highway/street driving right now.

If you do have a stuck rotor iI would not recommend touching anything in the area it will be very hot. try a temp gun.

Id have the front calipers inspected. They are VERY well known for having frozen lower pistons. Ive replaced mine once already. Ugh.:violin:
