New VS. Used

Not necessarily 4runner related, but at least Toyota. Randomly driving through the lot last night and they just happen to get a 2017 TRD Pro Tundra in Cement stickered at $47k. Drive farther down the lot and see a CPO 2015 TRD PRO in black with only 15,000 miles stickered for $45k.

I by no means am thinking of either(although I do want a Tundra), but have been watching the markets as well on 4runners and toss the idea around if its worth saving around $2K-$3K for 15k miles on a vehicle?

Thoughts/input/sarcasm ?

Only $2,000 less for 2 year old, CPO 2015 TRD PRO with 15,000 miles...is NUTS / or 4.3% off.
- I would expect more discount, even if both vehicles were 2017
- given that mileage, used vehicle is considered a "Dealer Demo" up North here
Must be priced for the ill informed...LOL.

Sometimes a real decent price discount can be had, on a new purchase - vs. buying gently used, overpriced:

A year ago December, my son & I teamed up to negotiate a brand new 2015 Lexus RX350 for him.
Dad did the leg work, since son wanted an Audi A5.
- first I visited the local dealer, to start my research
- next I stayed away from the 20-30 year career guys, with beer bellies & established client list
- I hand picked a mature 27 y/o with only a few months, under his belt
- I explained "I could hand deliver a qualified buyer, on a silver platter"...Posture #1...so work with me (I said)
- but in the end, "low price wins the sale" / so ultimate decision isn't mine
- he co-owns a local business, but currently living 2 hours away...tons of dealerships, in the big city
- we chatted for 1.5 hours, he was very gracious & knowledgeable / hungry for a sale
- concluding first visit, at dealership / salesman handed me a dealer promo lineup book, from Lexus President...very thoughtful

All I asked our son was:
Promise Dad you won't buy the new Audi, until you test drive one Lexus I hand pick for you...he agreed.
- over the next week, AUDI & VW got caught with ECM programs doctoring up Diesel E-Tests
- I now had more proof, the new AUDI would further depreciate faster
The 2015 Lexus timing couldn't have been better planned / as the 2016's would soon be rolling into dealer showrooms, in a week or two.

Following week, sons growing tired with his '08 FWD Nissan & winter coming along.
- off to the dealership with a cell phone text, to book the appointment with hand picked young salesman
- I introduce my son to the salesman & we get down to picking out his new ride
- but not until a leisure meet & greet, share a few jokes & good laughs together
- get the RX350 described in awesome detail & we go for a test ride...son agreed, much nicer than Audi Q5
- upon return, we start talking price & Toyota discounts
- the camera/Navi package/leather mouse was a $5,800 package with $5K Lexus rebate, paying cash only
- I interjected, son will be taking the low interest financing over 48 months
- if we don't get the full $5,000 discount off and more...we're out of here, now
So you tell me, do we stick around?...don't want to waste anybodies time...Posture #2

^^ We took control of the sales team & my son and I keep working off each others fuel...like a well oiled team.
- initially salesman said they needed a credit card & signature to talk #'s ($)
I let my son squash that idea, real quick...Posture #3
- then I said, we just took the power of the sale from your side of the desk, to our side...LOL
- 2 on 1 looks pretty good now...:lmao:..."money talks / bull-crap walks", so lets get some serious pricing done
- I even suggested talking to the head sales manager directly, if salesman is intimidated by his boss ...Posture #4
Posture #5 - Don't let your boss, behind closed door / screw up your easy sale.
- make it a pay day, and build your future "repeat client list"
Met the Head Sales Boss - before & after, while the deal was progressing more in final stages / time to read each other some.
- discuss 2016's rolling in now (2015 depreciation reality), & keep a poker face (a little while longer)...Posture #5.5

Two quick hours later, son had a brand new 2015 Lexus RX350 / top of the line loaded, with 13.3% off MSRP.
- and $40/month cheaper, than same vehicle with a over priced 4 year lease

Crew MAX. If I were to get a Tundra I would only go Crew-Max.

Buy Used. Let depreciation work in your favor, not against it.

They only time I'd buy new is if it was a high performance sports car under warranty and I had the cash to burn.

When the price difference is so negligible, I'd just go new and have peace of mind. Like another poster said, it might have low mileage, but I don't know how it was driven during that period of time. Plus, if you finance, you usually get a better rate on a new car than on a used car.

Right but again his argument was its used but comes with a 100k mile warranty as opposed to new car warranty around 30k?

Price is usually only negligible when a used car isn't really 'used'. Having on 15k miles on a truck doesn't count. If you find one with 50k, now that price difference gets bigger.

That extra $2k might be worth it if you were buying a used 3rd gen 4runner, but at $45k, what's a couple extra grand for the latest and greatest? You won't notice the difference. The higher an overall price gets, the smaller the effect of incremental adjustments to it are.

That's like the people who say that a new Toyota is overpriced versus the competition. Yeah, it may cost a smidge extra, but you're getting Toyota reliability with that, your vehicle payment will already be several hundred dollars a month, so what's an extra $10, $15?

Meh- all depends on what matters to you. If I sold my 4Runner right now, I'm looking at $400/mth total cost of ownership excluding maintenance. I bought it new 4 years ago. How many $50k vehicles can you buy new and own for that kind of money? Leases on many average/mass market vehicles cost that much. Heck 10 year old 4Runner LE's still go for $15k-20k depending on mileage.
