new wheels and tires for me!

okay, so my project is not completely finished, but it's definitely nearing completion (after two months of waiting for / working hard on the wheels) ... at least in the wheel/tire department. :hillbill:

here are a few quick pictures of the new setup, though i haven't finished the wheels completely, nor have i reapplied the badging to the truck.

they rub in the front a bit, but only on that little pyramidish plastic part beneath the front bumper. any recommendations before i hack that thing off and cause myself another month of work??

do you think the truck looks okay? it's a big change for me, going from the stock limited rims to some black ones with beefy tires, so i'm at that point where i'm not quite sure how i feel about how everything looks ... i think i like it a lot, but i'm not sure.

go easy on me, i do still have two pickle forks easily in reach.

the truck does shake now when driving even at low speeds -- well, just the steering wheel really shimmys a lot ... :dunno: i suppose maybe i need it re-aligned? or rebalanced even though they just did it today??

well, thanks for all of your help and input, this is certainly not finished, so any help would still be greatly appreciated as always guys!

edit: i'll take a picture from the side soon too, right now though it looks a little junky because the badging is off and the leftover adhesive makes it look robbed. so, once i fix that and wash it, and maybe fix the wheels up some more, i'll post a real good picture from the side.

it looks quite mean and aggressive...just keep those pickle forks near your driver's seat to complete the image for those ricers who get in your way!

From the angles you've shown, I like it. I'm eager to see the side view...even if it is "dirty" as you say...

I really like the new look, but your statement is the MAIN reason I am hesitating putting a lift on my rig. I have heard horror stories about never being able to have a smooth ride again. Plus, I don't want to un-engineer the main driving characteristics of the truck.

Those MTR's are almost impossible to balance.

I had MT/R's on my 2000 Cherokee. I loved them, but they ride like crap. I usually ran them around 30 psi, so the ride smoothed out a little. They are great tires. They gripped so much better than the BFG A/T's they replaced.

The noise or steering wheel shimmy you're feeling is probably the tires a little. Make sure they are well balanced. They will need it a little more often than other tires. If you have any questions about them, just let me know.

i don't know, i had the problem of the mechanic telling me that they couldn't align it ... but i got them to keep working on it, and they were able to get it completely realigned. even with the lift, they should always be able to get it within "the green" ....

and my ride was definitely smooth before and after the lift, even though i drove around with it for a number of weeks before having it aligned.

what i'm feeling right now is definitely a tire thing - whether it is unbalanced or someone got un-aligned, i know it is not an issue with the lift because before i took it to the tire store today it had no shimmy.

those look nice!! i was actually impressed by the handling today, other than the shimmy which i attribute either to the current inflation psi, or some unbalance issue ... maybe the tires themselves, i dunno, but i suppose i can ask when i take it back to get the spare in the next day or so. i should get to drive on the highway some this evening, so i'll get a better feel for just how bad it is.

rig looks great 4route!! I like it! that vibration you feel is probably due to unbalanced tires! Ive also heard the mt/r's are hard to balance but is THE tire for off roading......be sure the tire shop has a hunter gsp9700 machine and uses it

my 3rd gen had an annoying vibration at highway speeds since day one...useless dealer couldn't balance it right, so i took it to a shop with the hunter machine, and rolled out of there smoooth as glass! I'd say give rebalancing a try!

update:

well, after all the paint peeled off of all four wheels (after a single day of running them), i took them to get powder coated. took about a week, and got them back ... they were kind of messed up from the powder coater, but discount tire was able to mount 4 of the 5 tires. i've been running them now for a few weeks (two or three, i think) and they are great. when i got them remounted on the newly powder-coated wheels, they rebalanced them of course and used the interior type weights ... well, this time, they run perfectly and i have absolutely no vibration at any speed!

i was expecting the same vibration that i had the first time, but was happily surprised when everything ran so smoothly.

i have since then trimmed some of the inner fender to stop the rubbing, and i am actually very impressed with the tires. from everything i had read, i expected to never get them balanced properly, and i was expecting them to be loud and handle poorly in the rain .... but i do not notice any increase in sound, and so far they haave handled very well in the rain. haven't noticed any power loss either, though i do notice it being a bit slower to stop.

still trying to figure out the ideal pressure, but just wanted to give an update to say i'm very very glad that i chose the mtrs in spite of a few negative reviews i had encountered in the past.

i love them! even on the street!!
