New wheels and tires

Newbie here. Just bought an 08 Urban Runner. Looking for a larger and more agressive tire than the stock 265/60R18. I made the mistake by going to ORW to get some advice...$3500 later....:lmao: Now i've been researching all over the net and can't really get a straight answer.

I'll most likely not do too much wheeling so not looking to put a 6" lift on. I have XREAS and would prefer to keep it so I did get a 1" leveling kit and Spidertrax spacers from Jason Burtman but didn't put on the leveling kit yet. Spidertrax did bring the current tire out some but I wanted to maybe find a tire a little wider so I get around an inch out of the wheel well. I also wanted to keep the Limited wheels as well which is an 18" wheel. I don't want to look like a roller skate either So Gay

Jason Burtman also has the 3/2 lift kit which I was looking at because I could keep my XREAS. I don't know if I want a 285/70R18 because I believe that would equate to around a 33x12.50 and I don't want to lose that much power being that I have the 3.73 ratio.

I wanted to see how big I could go with the Burtman 3/2 lift kit without rubbing, keeping the 18" wheel, and keeping XREAS.

Great to be here and any help would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers

No worries guys...I just found a local dealer that had a spectacular deal on some 44" Super Swampers that he got from Mexico. I can't wait to put these bad boys on my 08 Turban Runner.

:lmao: That's going to take some doing...

4th gen 4Runners do very well with a 1" level and 32" class tires. The engine power remains strong, the brakes remain good and the mpg is still pretty good.

Search out username ark_swamp_rider, euy and many others who have done mild lifts with 255/75/17 (255/70/18) through 275/70/17 (275/65/18) sized tires. Up to a 32.1" diameter can fit in the spare tire area and require only a minimal fender liner adjustment to cure any rubbing. You can go to the 33" class but that requires more rub control effort. I really like a matching spare even though it's not totally necessary. I don't like giving away braking or acceleration if I don't have to either. IMHO without a V8 or re-gearing the 32" is close to the perfect compromise. The good news is when you go for the next upgrade, the aforementioned 44's, the new tires will be an even foot taller.

If you want to go higher many use the 2.5/1.5 Daystar with great success while retaining XREAS.

 I knew i'd get a response out of that one.

I'll take a look around and research some more.

Thanks man.

After some research I am looking to get some Goodyear Duratracs 275/65/R18 and a Daystar 2.5"/1.5" Lift/Leveling kit. Any issues you all think I could have with this setup? (i.e. rubbing, need to trim) Anything?

Cheers

md, you're going down a slippery slope (a fun slope).

my best advice is if you're going to lift it, do it right the first time becuz you'll actually save money knowing how enthusiasts dont stop until they get it just right.

like someone above, 32" tires and 2.5-3" lift is a nice suspension mod template. anything more you'll have to trim, consider gearing, bigger wear/tear/mpg hit, cv angle issues... etc.

if i were you, i'd personally dump xreas and go with the full 5100 bilstein at all four corners which will give you a nice 2.5" lift and do some OME rears. also, consider true AT tires because they give a functional and aesthetic ruggedness afforded by the lift. going with street tires... if u saw them side by side, you'd be like man the street tires look whack.

spacers are a stop gap solution - i'm not a fan because it's a totally cheap way to go about the business of lifting. using stock components riding that much higher... eh just not how i like to roll.

even with 32" BFG AT KOs it required trimming of the mud flaps and the front plastic fender liner (push it forward). i use the same OEM limited 18" wheels as u.

you'll need to budget about $3K with my same setup which includes labor and tax.

this is just my $.50. some will tell you they run spacers fine all day blah blah but if you have the money, why not do it right with high quality parts to match your high quality truck?

My advice, 275/65R18 and the 3/2 spacer lift, and get Nitto T/G's, Toyo OC AT's, or Cooper Zeon LTZ. Best of all worlds, looks and performs the part but does not ride any different than a less agressive tire. Duratracs are not an A/T tire, I don't care what the opinion is here, I have them they do not ride like an A/T tire, they ride like an M/T and hum the part.

Though with spacers you may rub a bit, and you might have to trim.

I definitely appreciate everyone's feedback.

I looked at the Bilstein option but did not want to get rid of XREAS unless I had to. I understand the ride with spacers is a little rougher vs. the Bilstein implementation. My question now is...how difficult ($$ and labor) would it be to ditch the XREAS and slap on some Bilsteins? Also mentioned was OME as an addition. I certainly don't want to spend more $$ when I don't have to in order to remove and replace when I could just implement the spacer option for lesser cost.

Speaking of the spacer option...I saw that there was a Daystar 2.5/1.5 available and wanted to stick with a 275/65R18 tire. Would I still need to trim with this option? If so, what exactly would I need to trim?

The setup you are asking about sounds pretty much identical to mine...

3/2 Cornfed spacer lift with 275/65/18's is my current setup

My 2 cents - the 3/2 spacer lift has worked out just fine for the last 2-3 years or so. Be ready for a harsher ride over speed bumps and potholes. If I had to do it all over again, I would have ripped out my XREAS on day 1 and invested the money up front for the right stuff the first time. I'm currently saving up for ICON coils, UCA's and 2.5 Resi's in the rear (overkill I know). But I'm ready to get rid of the spacer kit because it has started to sag in the front pretty bad. OME and Bilstein 5100's are reputable and have received a lot of feedback by members both here and on Toyota120. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback.

This XREAS bull$hit is starting to annoy me :bash: I should have just gotten an SR5 and went mod crazy. Oh well.

Question: I see that you have 275/65/18 Cooper Discoverer STT's on 18x9 ProComp Xtremes. I would like to keep my stock Limited 18" wheel. Could I put a 275/70/18 tire on the stock setup? I would think I would need the 3/2 lift instead of the 2.5/1.5 but just wanted to be sure.

275/65/18 cornfed 3/2 vs. Daystar

I figured I would give feedback on my experience, as I started with a similar stock setup, and it sounds like you are trying to accomplish the same thing I was.

I just sold my 08 Urban Runner with a cornfed 3/2, Spidertrax spacers, and cooper discoverer stt's at 275/65/18. I loved it and the ride was unbelievably smooth offroad. The only negative to this setup was that speed bumps (or similar bumps) were a little harsh in the rear end.

That being said, after using this setup for 20K miles, I have sold it off and purchased an 09 Urbanrunner. (sold the 08 for more than I bought the 09 and saved 30K miles) It doing it a second time the only thing I am trying to mitigate is the rear harshness if it is even possible.

This is where I need to consult the experts as well, My thought is that I may be able to accomplish the same look with .5" smaller lift (move from the Cornfed 3/2 to a Daystar 2.5/1.5) and then add FJ springs resulting in the same net clearance gain.

Conceptually, the 2.5 in the rear would not max out the spacing as much, resulting in reduced harshness. The question that arises then is, does adding the FJ springs offset any harshness benefit you get from going with a smalller spacer?

Experts, I think your feedback would help us both out!

PM me with an email address and I can shoot you some pics.
