NewB 95 Rod Bearing?

Great Forum. I just got a 95 4WD 3.0 SR5 that has a very hard 56,000 miles on it. The previous owner said it had a knock in the lower end. He had removed the oil pan thinking it was the rod bearings but lost interest in it and did not go any further.
Before I tear into the project is there anything else I should look for or replace. I am a little leary because I did not hear the knock. The rod bearings seem logical to me but wanted to see if there is another known cause to look for. I also did not want to do the work button it all up and find out while I was there I should have replaced or checked something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also what manual do you prefer. I have had good luck with Haynes and Chiltons and I have had some bad experiences with them. Is a factory manual worth the $$$?

i would go ahead and do the bottom end if the pan is off...should look around and fix the leak that caused the bearing to fail while you are in there..most likely the front seal on the oil pump behinf the crank pulley...while you are doing that might as well do the timing belt,waterpump and t-stat...i use a haynes book and it kinda sucks...has all the important stuff tho torque specs and the like...which is all i use them for anyway...good luck

Here is a thread where I did mine. Althought with a SAS and lifted it was easy. I ended up getting there to late and had to pull the motor about 2k miles later.

Now I am really stumped. Seals all looked good no oil leaks. Replaced the rod bearings. All went well there. I got this car from my step father who had bent the oil strainer plate on removal. I straightened it and installed the oil pan. The knock is still there and the dipstick seats correctly with out any resistance but shows no oil after adding 4.5+ quarts. I let it run for 15 minutes and checked the coolant for oil and found none. HELP.

You need to check you plugs and also pressure check your coolant system or check for Co2 at you radiator cap. Also drain the oil and see how much you have in there.

Replaced plugs. Drained the oil (4.5 qts)and dropped the oil pan again. Put it all back and the engine still has a knock low in mid front best I can tell. It does not seem to be building any oil pressure according to the gauge. Has anyone heard of the oil pump failing and making a knocking sound? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
