Newb - Wrecked rear diff, 4.30 w/e-locker

Fairly new here. Found the site looking for other 4Runner enthusiasts and getting idea for mods, repairs etc.

Well over the weekend while riding with my local Landcruiser group my truck took a quite a hit. After climbing up up a fairly steep rock face and having to gas it a little more, I got to the top and heard this banging sound from the rear end. Hmm...

Well we disconnected the drive shaft thinking it may have gotten bent...nope. Due to the late hour we decided that it would be best to put it 4WD and drive out (with lots of towing and winch assistance) in front wheel drive only. The closest city was 20 miles away after getting off the trail so I drove about 15 MPH down the road with the HORRIBLE sound coming from the rear end. You could hear the differential beating itself to death from a mile away!

I ended up having to leave my truck overnight at a truck stop in central Washington, 120 miles away from home. :( The next day I was able to arrange for a flat bed tow home for FREE (Thank you AAA)

My question is, looking at the following pictures, do you think it's worth trying to get the diff rebuilt or find a used one out there somewhere?

This is a 4.30 diff with factory e-locker.

Thanks!!

I believe I would just try to get another 3rd member, and clean all the debris out . The whole assembly may be cheaper, though.

A used 3rd member is the easiest route as mentioned, but if the actual differential is still ok (spider gears, case, etc) then the cheapest route would be to just get a new ring and pinion.

Unfortunately by the look of all that metal the spider gears stand a good chance of being damaged too. Since you like to wheel your rig you might consider putting an ARB air locker in with new r & p.

I bought a good used 3rd member for about 225 shipped. just installed it 2 hours and 45 minutes total.

Had the same problem about two months ago and it was close to 1200$ CAN of parts to fix it. Pinion and gear, seals and bearings. Labor not included.
You should defenitely go with a used one.

Well the quote back from the shop on repairing is $950. The ring and pinion are obviously bad and the bearings are now shot as a result of it beating itself to death.

Since the only STOCK used units that I could find available so far with 4.30 ratio and the factory e-locker are in the area of $700 I think I'll spend a little extra and get the re-gearing done that I wanted to do anyway at some point.

I guess I didn't realize my locker was worth so much. :)
