Newbie about to be 4runner owner

Hello all, I'm buying an 06 x-sp 2wd for the wife and picking it up tomorrow. I came across these forums and thought I'd sign up, seems to be a great site with tons of resources. Anyway, I was wondering if 17200 is a decent deal on the vehicle as it has 71500 miles on it. Also, what should I have checked or tuned up once I get it. Thanks ahead of time!

I paid just under $20k for my '06 SR5 V6 4WD with 40,000 miles back in '08. It was a certified leaser with leather shift knob and steering wheel, stereo controls on the wheel, no blemishes - very clean. I would think $17k for a 2WD w/ 71.5k and that's almost 5 yrs old might be a little steep in comparison - but then again if you see what other '06 vehicles cost with those miles then a 4Runner in comparison almost always looks like a good deal.

BTW - I bought mine in MA where you probably pay more compared to most other states.

I just paid under $19K for a 2005 SR5 V8 4x4 with sunroof and a few extras like leather steering wheel, leather on shift knob, dimming mirror, etc. It was a one owner trade in awesome condition and has 65,000 miles. This was at a dealership and they are usually a couple grand over private party. I think 17,200 is a bit steep for a V6 2wd. Is that asking price? If so, offer them $15 and start to look uncomfortable and wishy washy past that. Hold to $15,500 and be ready to walk away and tell them you will go look at another one and think about it.

This is assuming you are buying from a dealership. Private party? Just make a similar offer to start.

Get under the vehicle and look for rust on frame and exhaust, along with the other stuff- get well under there or ask them to lift the vehicle. Also look for leaking shocks and hydro lines if it has XREAS. Both Sports I looked at were leaking (XREAS lines) under 65K. Check the CV boots for leaks as well.

Well, I was thinking the extra cost was because of the XSP package on it. It sure seems pretty nice. It has the 20 inch Enkei wheels, leather interior/steering wheel with XSP labeled seats, the eclipse navigation and dvd system, and Borla exhaust. I'm starting to think I may be getting a bum deal.

The good thing about the whole situation is that by looking into this for my wife; I've gotten hooked on 4runners and will probably be looking into one for me in the near future. I have to take of the wife first though. I will be looking at the 4wd models for sure!

Doesn't hurt to see if they will whack $1,500 off the price. Just ask but don't get emotionally connected to this one. Actually, don't ask- tell them you will do it today for $15,500 and if they say No, thank them and walk away. Tell them if they change their mind, to send you an email. Don't give them your #. Let them know you are looking around "at a few at other dealerships that you would like to drive" or something like that. In fact, act like the 20" wheels will just hamper you offroad.
