Newbie doing his 75,000 mile service

Hi all,

Newb here and I'm in a world of hurt. I have a 2006 4Runner Sport that's due in for its 75,000 mile service. I had purchased service coupons when I first bought the car, and they just ran out. The pricetag for a $75,000 mile service comes out to $500...but the dealership can give me $5 off for my loyalty.

That said, I've been thinking for a while now that I should learn how to perform maintenance on my own car. My buddy's offered to show me the ropes, I just need to purchase the parts.

Now the questions are, where do I look for parts and should I get genuine Toyota parts? I checked out Toyota's website for the 75K service schedule and I need the following done:
1. Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
2. Rotate tires
3. Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
4. Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
5. Replace brake pads/discs

Off the top of my head I assume I'll need to purchase:
1. 5W30 oil filter
2. Compatible oil filter
3. Propeller lubricant
4. Brake pads
5. Brake rotors

Do you guys have any suggestions on where to purchase these items? Are genuine Toyota parts a must for any of these items?

Parts for 75k maintainence

i"d go to the Parts Dept. of a stealership and buy the parts there. Most of the work you should be able to do yourself, btw. Good Luck!

Yea, my buddy's been working on cars with his dad since his was a kid, he'll show me how to do whatever's needed.

As for the parts, is it necessary to buy the parts from the dealership? I've done some searches and literally every article/post I come across is about how dealerships rip off their customers on parts. At the same time, there's no online wholesaler that will sell genuine Toyota parts to the public...so it is what it is if I have to buy genuine parts.
