Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to say hi! I'm in the process of getting myself a 97-02 4 runner and was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers of any weakspots I should look for when inspecting the cars. Any tips or tricks? I'm not going to be doing lots of crazy offroading, yet maybe I'll get into that ;)

Any help is greatly appriciated.

Hello and welcome. This is a common question and luckily for you, in deciding to get a 4Runner you have chosen an easy vehicle to buy. There is nothing major or really specific to look out for other than the usual thing that would also apply to any other car.
The most common thing though that can fail is the MAF (mass air flow)sensor. These typically give problems from around 60k miles on. Easy to fix. A CEL will let you know when its bad. At 90k the timing belt should be replaced. A few hundred dollars there, and its common to replace the water pump at the same time.
Check out the search function on the site and you will find thousands of posts on buying new cars and problems that have occured, and most of your questions will be answered. Also there are many significant differences between the year models, (96-98, 99-00, 01-02) so make sure you read up on those and know what your looking for/at.
Best of luck.
