I know nobody here is looking for a life story but i'll give a gist of my situation.
Just turned 18 (Jan 6th) My dad owns a butterscotch color '84 and he promised it to me for $1. The only problem is that he blew the connecting rod on piston 3 when a little girl ran out into the street... I have always admired the truck and what the little 4 banger is capable of. I have about 5 thousand bucks stashed for her when I get out of high school and am wondering if anyone has advice. Unfortunately the truck has been sitting for ~3 years in a gravel storage space next to his 72 fire-bird. My dad also own a 1994 runner parked in our backyard that he is thinking of selling for about $1200. Would it be worth it to buy? Are the parts even exchangeable to a justifiable degree? It has the 6cyl so I can't just take the motor. (Pesky stock SA)
What has been done to the truck so far is a very cringe-worthy list. But I will start with the stuff I plan on keeping:
-Custom sqarestock F/R bumpers
Now for all the things I DEFINITELY need to change:
-Hood is seperating(Already own a spare so that's easy)
-4.5 inch body lift (When he put this in I was twelve and got mad at him for it even then.)
-Welded rear end...
Plus all the regular 4runner maintenance:
-Broken rear window
-Butt sag (Minimal though)
-Timing chain guide
-Shifer bushings
etc.
The final question (Sorry for the onslaught to whomever is reading this or will read it in the future) I am wanting to turn this thing into an off road truck (Not super serious right away) But what should I do to:
a) Future proof the truck and improve lifespan
b)Keep the truck roadworthy but able to hold its own off road.(aka not looking for 5.29 gears and 37s)
Thanks in advance! I love learning about toyota and plan to eventually build a (small) fleet in the coming years of my life!
Can't get pics the truck is about 2 hours out of town... Sorry.
Also can't remember all that was done to the truck but I know the rusting is minimal on the frame and gross on the body. (Saw the truck about 3 months ago)
