Newbie question #157 VSC Trac Light

Also VSC Trac On and engine check. All 3 are on. It's a 2001 SR5 and I've had it for less tahn 2 weeks. The issue is that I got gas yesterday (about 4/5 tank) and after I drove about a mile in the rain today the 3 lights came on. I read at yota tech that the gas cap can cause this from time to time so I checked and I found that I didn't shut the door over the gas cap all the way and it was wet inside. Would this cause the lights to go on? I don't want to run it to a dealer just yet but there is an auto zone that will pull the codes for free. Should I check it right away or give it a day or so to see if the lights go out? Thanx.

Did you check to make sure the gas cap is actually screwed on properly?

The door to the gascap letting water in wouldn't make these lights come out, the door is not water tight even if it is closed, but a gas cap that is not screwed on properly would.

A loose gas cap can throw a diagnostic code and turn on the Check Engine light. The evaporative emission control system is so sensitive that if the gas cap isn't tight, the system notices the change in vapor pressure and complains.

It shouldn't affect the VSC, though. I'd have AutoZone pull the code, and the come back here to do more research. VSC depends on a number of different sensors, including the anti-lock brake system. On past vehicles I've seen rain have an adverse effect on the ABS sensors at times, so there might be a connection there.

As it turns out

I double checked the gas cap early this morning and went to auto zone about an hour ago. The guy said the code was typical of the gas cap issue and when I started it up after the test the 3 lights were fine. Darn sensors, I've had the 4runner 1 week and when the CEL and VSC came on I thought, "Oh no, not already".
