Newbie question regarding purchase

Hello,

I've been lurking this forum and I think I have decided to go forward with purchasing a 4runner. I am currently looking at a loaded 06 sport V6 and a few 04/05 limited models and I'm leaning towards the 06 due to the miles, price, and year. I'm familiar with the the two motors, but I do have a some other random questions. I only tow (2,000lbs) a handful times a year, so I think the v6 will suit me just fine.

-Is it fairly simple to install the Nav unit if the vehicle isn't already equipped with it? Is it a "plug and play" process?

-Other than the few options not available for the "Sport" is the sound proofing and ride the same as the limited?

-The one dislike about the 06 is the Chrome front... is it easy to swap out the chrome grille pieces with body matching pieces?

-Is there anything to look out for when shopping for an 05 or 06?

With respect to the navigation, it's not simple to install the factory nav system after the fact. If you really want the nav, the best way to get it is pre-installed. Most of the nav systems came over in V8 Limiteds, so the nav is going to limit your choices. The next best thing is to go with an aftermarket nav. Check out Crutchfield for some ideas there. The aftermarket nav systems are very good, and for the most part, they just replace the radio head unit in the dashboard. Although they may not look it, the portable GPS units are good, too. Despite the smaller screen, they're quite functional. For those, check out the Garmin StreetPilot or Nuvi product lines.

The Sport Edition is tuned for a more sporty ride, which is slightly stiffer than the SR5 or Limited suspension. One of the key traits of the Sport suspension is the X-REAS system, which connects the shocks diagonally (picture the tubing forming an "X" across the truck), reducing body roll in tight corners. The Sport also has slightly bigger disc brake rotors. Additionally, the Sport has some unique exterior features, such as the hood scoop, and different running boards and roof rack rails.

You may wish to drive both a Sport and a Limited and make your own comparison.

I think it is pretty easy to swap the grille surround between chrome and body-color. The piece should come out easy enough; I think the main issue would be cost. If you switch to a body-color piece, not only do you have to buy the part, but you'll also need to have it painted the right color.

Both the 05 and 06 are great choices. There were a few general cosmetic changes in 06, such as LED taillights, the shape of the wheel wells, and the introduction of 18" wheels on the Limited. There are no mechanical issues or bugs that would make me stay away from one or the other.

Thank you for the info... so if I purchased a nav unit out of a limited, I couldn't easily install it into a sport model? How about the sound proofing? The limited I test drove the other day was very quiet... would the same be said for a sport edition? Thanks again!

Hi will04...excellent choice no matter what year 4Runner you end up with. As far as sound proofing goes, all models will be the same. I recently disassembled all 4 doors and a rear quarter panel and there is very little noise-dampening material installed (zero in the quarter panels). I added Dynamat Extreme to all 5 surfaces. While there is a difference, I have to say that the 4Runner is pretty quiet stock. One "complaint" I have heard from others is that the large rear-view mirrors create more wind-noise than other vehicles....I, myself, have not noticed this much.

Welcome. a key variable is the V6 or V8. with the six you can run in 2WD mode with the eight you run in all wheel drive with no option for 2WD. I took the suggestion here and drove the SR5 and the Sport opting for the sport. stiffer suspension, bigger brakes, heated outside mirrors and some very nice amenities. If you are towing the XREAS can come in quite handy. good luck.let us know with Pics!!
