newbie question - tow package

Did the "tow package" from Toyota include anything other than the actual hitch? (like different water pump, trans cooler, etc?)

Anyone know if one can still get the "package" installed for a '95?

If you're planning to tow:

Check the back of the truck. If you see a hitch underside then you can technically tow. Make sure that you have the proper wiring harness(es) if whatever you're towing requires. Also having a tranny cooler helps.

If you don't have any of that, you can purchase a hitch from any Uhaul or any automotive store. Usually Uhaul is one of the best places to go as they have all the equipment ready and will install it for you there.

Hope this helps.

more what I'm looking for is information on if toyota changed anything engine/trans wise when they installed the tow package.

I'm looking at possibly buying a 4runner that does not have the tow package - and if the only difference is the hitch (or lack of) then it's easy enough to add... if it's a different water pump/etc it's a bit more difficult to replicate...

very cool, thank's for confirming waskillywabbit.

I found a 4runner this weekend and bought it... '97 with high miles but good condition... 16" wheels with mostly worn out tires, and a couple minor fixups needed to be 100%.

no tow package (guess nobody tows anything around here) but obviously that won't be a problem. Dealer wanted $600 to install the class III hitch, I declined ;) I'll just order one and install it myself.

now I got something to tow the race car around wohoo! No more borrowing trucks or renting uhauls LOL.
My first truck! heheh... Brings us up to 3 street cars/truck, 1 race car and 2 parts cars!

Congratulations!

Check out Ebay. I found my last hitch for around $100 and put it on myself, bought a wiring harness, I think around $30 and wired it up myself. They are definitely not worth $600. That's why they call it the STEALERSHIP!

Hope it works out for you!
