Considering buying an '03-'05 4Runner or 1998-2002 Tahoe for towing a 3500 lb boat 10 times/yr to the lake 40 miles away and a 5000 lb towable lift, 2 times/yr 60 miles. And only in the winter when its bad out. The other 345 days of the year it will sit out in the back 40 in the woods.
Otherwise I tow the boat with my sienna but not the 5K lb lift.

OR....would a 2000 tahoe be better suited?

Go test drive a V8 4runner and a tahoe if you haven't already. Obviously everyone here is going to side with 4runner. Go see what you like.

I am gonna be the devils advocate. I love my Runner, but I just bought a '99 Chevy 2500 as a tow beast.

If towing is uber important, and your going to tow some heft... that Tahoe is a better choice. I have the V8 and it can def. hold its own, but it is short. And being short makes it a bit squirelly.

And, lets be honest, if there is something GMC does, and does well... it is tow beasts. Their transmissions may not be the snappiest or the most refined, but they are pretty damn hefty and hearty.

Just my opinion. My 4runner will remain my daily driver, but I had a buddy willing to part with a Chevy Silverado 2500 6.0 v8 for 1k. Buddy "discount" and I couldn't pass it up.

Chevy's and GMC's are just super great haul machines. He has a GMC right now and LOVES IT.
The Tahoe, being built on the full size truck frame, is gonna be much more stable.

Hope that helps.

What does a 4R V8 timing belt involve replacing when they get in their and how much $$$??

What should I look for on this V8?
What price?
Does the carfax look good?

Check for the amount of rust. I had a good amount on my 06. I'm in MN as well. Also for the V8 check the manifold for any signs of cracking.

Seems high for the price. I got my 06 with 105,000 for 15.
