I just purchased a 95 3.0 4x4 4 runner. the speedometer and odometer not working but all other gauges are. and also when i put it in 4 wheel the little 4x4 green light on dash flashes and clicks until its in. green 4x4 never stays on. and also i may be freaking out or something but my 4 low seems weak. tires suck but it does not seem to be grabbing or spinning front wheels well. but when i put in gear it jerks well letting you know its locked in. So, i guess what im asking is

1. Why is speedo and odo not working. i cant find the vss1 sensor everyone speaks of.
2. why does green 4x4 light flash and not stay on
and 3rd. does anyone have the same issues with the 4 low seeming not to pull well. (my rear wheels spin and slide, but i thought my fronts would kick in and help pull me out).
sorry im a newbie to the 4 runner off road scene. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks guys and gals.

For the speedo/odo, check the connection on the T-case--the cable goes in on the top rear of the case, from the passenger side. The fitting may not be down all the way, preventing the cable from engaging. As to the 4LO issue, it sounds like your T-case may not be shifting in properly. There are others here who will probably know better on that.

1. I'm not sure if you have a mechanical (cable) or electronic (wire) speedo, but either way the is a sending unit/sensor mounted on the pass side of the t-case towards the rear.
The problem could be with the sensor, cable, or in the gauge cluster.

2. The light is flashing because of a problem with the 4wd system.
There are sensors that check that the front axle locks and the t-case is in 4wd (Hi or Lo range). If you have an auto trans the are more sensors.
The front axle not locking is most common, the ADD system uses to vacuum switching valves (VSVs) to lock and unlock the front axle for 4wd. The vsv can fail or the vac lines can fail or become disconnected.
Place to start checking is the ADD actuator assy on the front axle (drivers side, beside the diff). Look for disconnected wires and hoses.

And if you want more info on the ADD 4WD system search this forum or Google.

I switched the vacuum cables under the hood and the 4x4 works good now.. i finally found the vss1 sensor and it is mechanicle. so i found a junk yard in town with the same yr runner as mine and am going to get it off it.. also. for some reason mine is missing the little pin on the inside of cable to the gear and sensor. thats why its not working.. but the one in junk yard has it. . so im going to pull it this weekend... hopefully it will work.
thanks for all the replies...
