Newbie Questions re: shocks

Hi everyone,

I have a 2008 basic 4wd. Everything is OEM. No xreas. The vehicle has 140,000 miles on it. I've never replaced the shocks and it's more than passed-time that I do so.

I've been reading the forums trying to get an idea of what to do. i'm a lawyer and am absolutely clueless when it comes to cars. The most I've ever done is install a new head unit in my 4runner. My plan is to buy the parts that I need online and take them to someone where I live to install them for me.

People here seem to be pretty high on the Bilstein shocks. I went to Bilstein's website and the models it suggests for the 08 4runner are the 33-187174 (rear) and the 24-239370 (front). From Amazon, those parts come out to be about $325. I'm fine with that. If I buy those, are there any other parts that I need to also just go ahead and buy and take to the installer? Do I need new springs, given that the shocks seem to lift the vehicle between 2 and 2.5 inches? (I really don't know how this works).

Any thought's y'all have would be appreciated.

These shocks just give you the option to lift up to two inches with the stock springs, via an adjustable spring perch. There are grooves in the shock that a c clip fits into, and depending on which is chosen you can run them at stock height, .85" lift, 1.75" lift, or 2.5" lift with the same coils that you have now. Of course, you can always get some new coils that will achieve lift or different ride characteristics if desired.
 
No problem man! When I first came here I had no idea how a lift kit worked or what even went into it, I was just as confused as you. Now I've learned so much on here that I've done all of the installs myself and am considering doing a regear myself. Hope you find the setup that you want!
