Newbie: Rough shift in 4LO from 1st to 2nd

Hi all,

I took my 04 4runner beach driving this weekend, and it ran great...other than the rough shift from 1st to 2nd. Is this normal? I was maybe going <10mph, but when i needed it to switch into 2nd, it felt like the rpm's went higher than normal, then when it did shift, it quickly locked into gear and like...shook the car (as if you were driving a clutch and let off to fast).

Is this normal or should i have a mechanic take a look at this?

Yes thats exactly how 4 lo works. I was surprised at first too how abrupt the gear shifts were.

The trans shifts late to maximize rpm in each gear in the event you are climbing a really steep hill.

If you get up to about 25mph then slow to a stop, the trans shifts through 4 gears right before you stop - really quite interesting.

cool thanks guys...yeah i was driving on the beach with my girlfriend the other night and had it in 4LO...it shifted so damn hard that she spilled her drink lol. i was like...uhh, i'm gonna have to ask everyone on the forums about that...she just rolls her eyes lol

Make sure you activate 4lo at least once a month so that the actuator doesnt freeze on you. I got a new left over 07 in Jan08 and the actuator was frozen. Luckily warranty covered 22hours of labor and a $2500 part.

really? my car is 5 years old, i can almost guarantee when i put it in 4LO the first time the other day it was the first time the car had ever been in it lol

Consider yourself lucky then. Frozen actuators are very common.

03 4Runner and shifted into 4Lo for the first time ever.

After one blink of the "4LO" light, it clunked...and was in gear.
