Hey all, I am new to the 4runner forum. I am seriously considering purchasing used 4runner. I am not sure what year I should consider or what year i should stay away from if any? Currently, driving a 09 subaru outback with 132,000 and want to get away from subaru entirely. I am done with worrying about the hg issues or idler or pulley issues failing causing major engine failures. How reliable are the 4runners? any serious mechanical issues to look out for? thanks in advance for your replies.

They are Highly reliable machines, I don't believe there is another brand/model higher. That said they are not perfect. Any year is great, I favor 3rd generation units (96-02). The only serious problem some can have is 4wd units with the 3.4L auto trans (see known issues in guide above) can leak engine coolant into transmission causing it to fail. Southern ones are known to have less rust issues. Drive and closely inspect your future joy!

Thanks guys for your input, i was looking into the difference between the models such as SR5, trail and limited. I found out after researching, that on the limited model it is a constant 4wd? meaning i don't have do manually put it into 4wd like the sr5 and trail? With that being said, do you think i should be looking at limited models? I am not sure which is the best model out of the three? thanks again for your responses.
 
I currently live in Hiram, Ohio where we get about 100 inches of the white stuff every year. I was wanting to know from everyone on this forum, when i get my used 4runner-not sure what generation. Should I invest in snow tires, or do u all think stock tires would be just fine? thanks for your inputs in advance.
