Newbie with a question about 4x4 not working

Hey all,
I'm looking at a 97 4Runner SR5 v6 with auto transmission, with 116,000 miles. Overall the vehicle is in solid condition, but during the test drive the 4x4 failed to engage. When I move the lever into the 4hi position I can hear what I believe to be some sort of solenoid click, but the dash light doesn't come on and there definitely is no front wheel engagement.
Anyone have any suggestions where to look or what could be causing this issue?

If the truck has ADD, there's several switches, relays, and vacuum solenoids that can go bad (probably the Lock vac solenoid).

Did you drive the 4runner forward a few feet to see if it engages?

With these damn auto-hub systems, they sometimes need a few turns of the wheel to lock/unlock.

Also, if you test it again, after hitting the 4wd button, put it in reverse and drive back some 20 feet. Sometimes my 01 won't engage unless I back up, but othertimes it's good when just in drive.
