Newbie with Engine Swap question

Hello All,
Just purchased a Black 99 SR5 4runner with a 3.4 V6 at an auto auction. Ran a Carfax report after puchase, no accidents and I seem to be second owner/ milage at 127,232. Right after purchase I put the SUV in shop to have broken timing gear and broken bolt removed from cam, well it seems like I will be needing to install a new engine. Mechanic stated "catastrophic engine failure." I'm debating about taking on the engine install myself and wondering how difficult this would be for a newbie. I can do basic car care,brakes,water pump and starter. I've already purchased a replacement engine from a wrecked 2002 4runner and was wondering if this should be a direct swap? My 4runner has the following 5VZFE SR5V ATM 4FC FA16 202 and 2002 has 5VZFE SR5V ATM 4FC FB17 8L7 . I've found a link at YotaTech http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/fsm/repair.html but was hoping someone might have a few tips or tricks to make install easier for a newbie. Thanks and hope you guys don't flame me to bad.....Pic of new engine to be installed included, sorry about the size of pic but can't seem to shrink it to a smaller size.

I haven't done a 4runner before but I have done several Subaru engine rebuilds/installs (I'm currently in the middle of an other build).

Prior to my first rebuild/install I had done a lot of maintenance but never did an install before. I just downloaded all the info I could find and did it.

If you are confident with your wrenching abilities, have a place you can work (covered) and have/rent the right tools (including cherry picker, jacks, jack stands) and have the time (give yourself twice as long as you think) go for it. You will get an amazing education/understanding of the truck.

replaced my motor just last year in my little carport-not too hard of a job-took me just about 4 days by myself and really took my time.
while the motor was out i replaced all seals(i replaced my cam(x2),crank,valve cover,main seal and oil pan gaskets) also did replace the timing belt and water pump...
one thing that really helped was the alignment studs-basically old or extra tranny bolts(x2) with the heads cut off,they made the motor slip into the tranny so easily-acted as guide pins as i replaced the motor with the tranny still in the truck...

i think the the newer engine is drive by wire and the 99 uses a throttle cable. So you might have to change intake manifolds and associated sensors.

Btw - How much was a replacement engine?

Got lucky and found guy selling engine for $650 on craigslist and it also came with a 3 month warranty from salvage yard. Motor has 110,000 miles on it and seems in pretty good shape. Yeah I was kind of wondering about what other parts would need to be swapped out besides intake manifolds. Still debating if I should leave tranny in or pull with engine.

It will be a major pain to do with the tranny attached.
I'd un-bolt it first.

Yeah after a little more research it does look like it may be easier to leave tranny in place. Still wondering why Toyota service manual shows to take it out

The 3.4 from the 2002 has also has different vacuum tube setup than the other 3rd gens. And the drive by wire throttle. I would consider looking for a 99 3.4

By appearance both engines look identical and since replacement engine came with fuel injection unit installed, was hoping that would carry over as well. Guess my luck didn't hold out on that one. Think 2002 engine should still work "crossing my fingers" but now it will just take a little longer to install.
