Newbie with some 4x4 issues

Hello All,

Just got my 1st 4runner. Its a 1990, v6, 5 speed, seems to be pretty good. I just have a couple of issues if anyone has some good advice.

1) My 4wheel drive does not work. When I shift into 4high I here something click under the dash, and when I shift into 4low the rear end is in low range but the front is no worky. Just wonder where I should be looking, I have no toyota experiecne. Common 4wheel problems?

2) This 4runner has a toyota alarm, when you open a door and close it, the lights go nuts. They flash rapidly and turn off after a while. I also have to push the clutchless start button in order to start the rig. The alarm stoped going off for a day and then I could just push the clutch in and start right up, now it will not start until you push the clutch button.

Im wondering if there is a way to disconnect the alarm? And maybe these two problems have a common rely or something?

Check your locking hubs, they may not be engaging for the 4WD.

Old Toyota alarms are wacky, my Mom has on on her '92 Celica, and it's always going weird stuff. Either replace it or deal with it.

Hi thanks for the reply. What should I be looking for in the hub? What causes these hubs to lock? Im old school, I just have old chevy with manual hubs.

Are these alarms suppose to have remotes? Anyway to just unplug the alarm?

Do you have the automatic hubs or manuals?

If you have the ADD system I believe the front is engaged with a vacuum system that is prone to many problems. Most do an ADD bypass and install manual hubs to get around this...

I would recommend picking up a repair manual, which you can get at most automotive stores. You'll find more detail on the hubs there, as well as countless other things that are useful to know for any repair from replacing a radio to a complete engine rebuild.

Hi,

I have the auto locking hubs. The thing went into 4wheel when i drove it off the trailer, then I swaped the spindel on the passanger side, Im pretty sure its the passanger side hub. I lifted the vehicel up in the air, and put it in 4wheel, the front driveline was spinning, just not the tires.

Whats the common problem, fixes with the hubs?

oh and if i turn the front wheels, the axels do turn, so im guessing there is nothing wrong with the hub? what engauges the front axels? It it vaccum powered? or have some kind of electric switch, cause i have funny electrical things going on.

The front axels are usually always locked to the front driveshaft, the only disconnects in the system would be the transfer case, and the hubs. It could be a bad differential...
