Next Gen options

I know the 3rd gen is tough to compete with but if you were going to move to a newer runner which gen/year would you choose and why? Personally I like the 10's and 11's..

Most likely 5th gen. I like Rorck's build a lot. I would also like to do a sas tacoma though :artist:

The 5th gen would provide more 'modern' luxuries.. Not to say our 3rd gen's aren't timeless!!

Seems like 5th gen 10 or 11 around here (Pacific NW) vary in price from 25k to 30k depending on options. Not too many with
Navigation. I paid 16k for my 98 in 2004 and thought that was Alot. It had 50k on it. Been casually shopping for a while and been looking at the Audi q5 in same year range and yes they Are luxury but I really love the utility of the T4R!

When it's time to get rid of my 3rd I'll most likely go to a Tacoma.

The only reason is that I hate borrowing someone's truck when I need to haul something. Something with a Pack Rack, and a Maggiolina Pop Top.

I'd go 5th gen 2014 and newer. Probably a limited, as that would fit my lifestyle best.

However, my next vehicle will likely be the next Tundra Generation.

From a capability standpoint, 4th and 5th gens are nearly identical frame, suspension and drivetrain. There is no clear "best" unless you have some specific need.

For towing or if you just like more power, a 4th gen with the 4.7 would be ideal. Post 2005 4.7 has vvti, which is good for a few more ponies and a 5 speed transmission compared to the 4 speed found in 2003-2004. Downside of the V8 is it has a timing belt instead of chain, and it can't be upgraded for power like the 4.0 can.

Other than that, pick your poison in terms of packages, options, looks, etc. I personally think the pre-facelift 5th gen 2010-2013 is beyond fugly, but the 2014 and newer ones look OK.

I like the 4th gen. My next one will be a 08 or 09. I hardly ever see 09s for sale I guess they didn't sell many because people waited for the 10.

If you can afford a 5th gen go for an early Trail Edition. They have the crawl control feature which makes them a lot more capable than 4th gens. Unless you can find the infamous 2009 Trail Edition 4th gen with locking rear diff. More likely to win the 700m PowerBall!!!

I'm going into a 200 series Land Cruiser once this hand-me-down 3rd Gen dies.

Unfortunately its 16 years old, runs like new and only has 115k miles so it will be awhile. :)

3rd Gen has 1 great perk - no car payment and dirt cheap insurance is nice while saving for a down payment on a house.
