I want the 4.7 liter V8 diesel that's in the Australian version of the 79 series Land Cruiser. Have you seen/heard that on any of the Ronny Dahl videos. What a sweet sound, and 400+ ft-lbs of torque at 1500 rpm.

But, it'll never happen here. Sigh....:-(

Hard to say. The weight and mpg savings would drive it that direction, but why make the 4runner basically another version of the Highlander? That market is already covered. The only thing a uni-body 4runner would bring to the SUV table is a low-range tcase, and who's gonna rock crawl in a unibody SUV (at least for long!)?

Toyota's biggest problem with the 4runner is its popularity. People keep buying the darn things, and that screws up their fleet mpg numbers. If I were them, I'd keep the basic design and raise the price by about 10 grand.

I agree with all you wrote, and I'm not hoping for a unibody. But it does seem to be the direction things are going.

Toyota can sell 79 series in the USA as a commercial vehicle and not as a passenger vehicle but they don't because they don't want to.

Toyota filled for a bunch of ladder chassis with hybrid stuff in it patents a couple of years ago. I'm confident the next 4Runner will have hybrid options.

You know, an electric 4runner would be awesome offroad - DC motors have incredible low-end performance. But, I'm not so sure I want to hit the Maze district in Canyonlands for a week just relying on a single battery charge. Best have some pretty good solar panels on the roof

You nailed the reason that I think the 4Runner will never be a uni-body. If I wanted a uni-body vehicle there are literally so many other options that make more financial sense than the 4Runner. I think Toyota knows this and is why thus far they have stayed away from changing to such a platform. It just wouldn't make sense for them to do that. That's like taking a small boat that does great in its own small little pond and then tossing it into a huge already oversaturated/overcrowded ocean. It's going to sink in all the other uni-body options that are available.

Leaving ponds and oceans aside, it's worth recognizing that MPG standards are only getting stricter worldwide.

Toyota has more to lose than to gain at this point, and needs to design efficiency into ALL their models. Does that mean that the new 4Runner will be a castrated version of it's former self?...possibly. I don't think it has a snowball's chance in hell though of being tougher and more off road worthy as the current truck. It's already too heavy.

Automakers are doing some very weird crap these days....no one knows what it will become. They'll probably bastardize the name and run it into the ground like Ford is doing with the Mustang, Chevy has done with the Blazer, and like Toyota has bloated the American version of the LC 200. They have all lost their way while trying to guess what the buyer is going to want in 2-3 years.

The 4runner has gotten bigger and bigger every generation....why?

I'd be the first buyer for a brand new 6 speed Elocked 3rd gen 4 runner. Perfect size, everything you need, nothing you don't. As long as it gets proper rust proofing this time. New ones are too big and too expensive, for what gain? Some 20" wheels, interesting paint colors and over designed headlights and taillights?

Until they come out with something better than the 2UZ in a 4Runner I'm not remotely interested in 'upgrading'.

This. Need another V8 4Runner. With supercharger options.

Yeah, the current 6 is pretty gutless where it counts for me...lower in the RPM range and going up mountains. My buddy has a 5th Gen which I occasionally have driven. It isn't a dog at all but you have to gas it and shift down in gears quite a bit more compared to my 4.7L. If they either pop in a V8 (will not happen) or retune the 6 to better power delivery and more torque, I'd consider it. Other than that, it needs to be modernized. Same with the Tundra...looks 2005ish on the inside.

Nothing feels like a V8. The V6 is a fine motor but it doesn't have any soul. That said, a mild hybrid V6 is much more likely than a naturally aspirated V8 – in any vehicle like this moving forward. The N/A V8 is (and maybe should be) dead.
