On the 4.0 V6 with 21,000 miles. I've used the search feature and from what I can tell, I need to replace the plugs at 30,000 miles, however, I won't have to replace the timing belt since the V6 has a timing chain and no need to service the tranny because it's "supposed" to have lifetime fluid (unless you tow a lot). What else am I missing? Just want to get all the info I can. 30,000 miles for plugs sounds too soon for a clean burning engine like this one. ???

Spark Plugs, etc.

First of all, you are correct about the automatic transmission fluid on the '05 SR5. It is a sealed system (no dipstick or external access to it) filled with a synthetic fluid that is very expensive and (supposedly) does not need to be replaced unless it gets overheated or you have towed things frequently.

I do not know if it is true, but there is supposed to be a sensor of some sort that will alert you if the transmission fluid needs serviced. Perhaps it goes off if it detects a certain amount of heat, stress or wear.....I just don't know quite how it works.

As for the timing chain, you are correct again. I know the 4.0 V-6 has it, but I am not sure if the 4.7-liter V-8 still uses a belt. I know someone on here will know! The chain should last the life of the engine & you should never have to mess with it.

As for spark plugs, I know that most cars now use the platinum-tipped plugs that go for 100,000+ miles before needing replacement. Heck, even my 2002 Nissan Sentra has them. I only have 10,000 miles on my 4Runner, so I have yet to give any thought to changing its plugs, although I will take a glance at the owner's manual or ask the stealership the next time I am there for my state inspection (which will probably Monday morning).

I don't know why Toyota would not use them on such a high-cost vehicle as the 4Runner, but perhaps there is a good reason why they did not. Maybe you could install platinum ones at 30k if you decide to replace them at that time.

EDIT: I somehow new that 'sharp4runr' would chime in with an answer -- as he always does.

hehe, I'm here to help Jeff :D

And you are right about the V8 having a timing belt. One of the benifits of the chain is it will let you know with some noise when you need to get the chain serviced. The belt will just snap and I'm not sure if the V8 is a non-interference engine (I think it is) so it may cause more damage in the event the timing belt fails (but I'm sure the owners here woudn't let that happen;):

If you are not leasing the vehicle and plan on driving it until she quits, then I would replace the diffs, transfer case, and coolant fluids every 30 km miles.

Replace engine oil and oil filter
Rotate tires
Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
Replace limited-slip differential oil, if equipped
***Replace spark plugs 6***
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine air filter
Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)

Well, there it is. Thanks for the info. I just can't believe that they would use such cheap plugs as to need replacing that soon. Most all cars now go with the 100,000 pugs! I'll probably just change them myslef when it's due. Any pointers on doing that on the V6? I've changed plenty of plugs before, just not on this engine. Any tips?

Thanks for all the info!

I assume that it will be okay to go back with a 100,000 mile plug? The manual say leave the gap stock so I guess I shouldn't mess with the gap?
