Nightmare shimmy/vibration after hitting coyote

I'll try to keep the story short, but it's really been a nightmare so far, any input to help them get this damned thing fixed right would be appreciated:

- December: Slammed into a coyote going about 60-70mph at night, raining, front right. The impact was pretty severe, front right bumper was a mess, headlight even cracked, foglight ruined, ripped out the entire inner fender. Startled the hell out of us, ended up off the side of the road in a ditch, front right and side resting on some huge rocks. Was able to back up out of the mess, but the damage was done.

- Insurance covered everything, didn't seem like much more than cosmetic damage at first, but the bill ended up being some $9k worth :jaw drop:. New passenger front door, new bumper, headlight, running board, skid plates, etc etc. One of the biggest expenses was the Christmas tree of lights on the dash after the wreck, which turned out to be ABS wire to the front right wheel (although the shop that worked on it first replaced the wheel sensor, then the entire computer, and THEN replaced the wire which finally fixed the prob....of course billing State Farm the entire batch, intersting.)

- Then the "State Farm Approved" body shop botched the paint job among about 15 other ridiculous things I complained about (including stealing my license plate registration sticker WTF), told them my A/C wasn't working right, they said could have "NOTHING TO DO WITH IT" but turned out they disconnected the damn cabin temperature sensor and never reconnected it.

- I complain about vibration in the front and pulls to the right since the wreck, they send it to a shop to check alignment, all supposedly good.

- Took it to Big O where I bought the tires originally, they rebalance and check alignment for free, "all good." Yet drive away and still steering wheel vibration + pulling to the right.

- Called State Farm, complained, they say take it back to the shop that worked on it originally. I say, NO, I do NOT want them to work on it, referenced the nightmare problems thus far. I want the dealer to check it out. They say fine, tell the body shop that you want the mechanical checked out by the dealer.

- Truck goes to the dealer, they take off my wheels and tires, put on a set from another 4Runner, test drive, claim all is "smooth, it's your tires causing the problem...those oversized (265/70/17 BFG AT KO's) are causing it." I say, hmmm, never shimmied like that before the wreck, nor the pull to the right. I go down there, test drive with other 4Runner tires/wheels on, seems much better, but still a slight shimmy and pull. Dealer: "well, these are from a used 4runner, so they're not brand new tires, you can expect that, but it's definitely better no?" Me: "I guess.. granted we've only gone a few miles"

- Take it back to dealer, they insist it's gotta be the tires. "Those 'oversized' offroad tires and all! Big-O must not have balanced using lug-centric adapter" I pay ~$100 to rebalance tires @ the dealer re-check alignment. "All good" says dealer, "however we notice radial pull and your steering wheel is a bit off"

- Shimmy seems a bit better, but still there, especially at ~60-70mph. Dealer: "that's the best we can get it with those tires"

- I conclude OK, screw it, tires must be bad, I'm over it. Went to Costco today, had them slap a set of Michelin LTX AT2 265/70/17's on, they balance with the lug-centric adapter, and tell me "hey, you've got a bent rim here!!" I have them shove the bent rim to the spare, maybe problem finally solved!

- Drove off, hit the freeway, low and behold STILL shimmy and pulling to the right, UGH! Now I'm out $100 re-aligning and testing + $1100+ new tires, and still have the problem. My BFG's were probably fine the whole time.

SOOOOOOOOOO, bottom line, am I crazy thinking something is has to be JACKED with the suspension? What the heck could it be? Another alignment? Bent axle? Steering rack messed up from the wreck? Something's definitely wrong and I'm going to take it back to the dealer again, but if you have any ideas where I should point them I'd appreciate it. This whole mess has been a nightmare ... my once luxury vehicle is now unpleasant to drive, and I'm about to drop a dime to the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair about this crap. State Farm has been nice thus far, except for the letter I just received saying their "investigation shows that YOU were at fault for the accident for 'failure to properly pay attention'" or some crap like that .... will definitely be appealing that junk as well.

Set up a meeting with the claims adjuster, take him for a ride on the nice new tires, let him witness the shimmy, park the car at home, hand him teh keys and say, " please bring it back when its fixed" Smile and ask for the keys to his car.

Man, that sucks, hitting stuff like that does all kinds of hidden damage. Good luck with getting all that sorted out

I would say to check the obvious. Jack the front of the 4runner up, spin the driver and passenger side tires by hand to see it there is any resistance difference between the two sides (maybe a dragging caliper or wheel bearing). Can you post a print-out of the latest alignment. Being told "its fine" doesn't cut it for me- I need numbers (did alignments for 8 years at my former job). You said it had a bent rim, where, right front? If so, I'm thinking the hub may be bent a little. Did the shop replace the strut on the right front?

Thinking the hub might have got bent, also go ahead and have the wheel bearing checked, they aren't usually servicable, but it could have gotten messed up.

Goes without saying, keep all the writing and conversations that you have had with the insurance company and every one.

were there any suspension parts replace? we just had a car in our shop. the exact same promlem. alignment was fine the guy took the car and it was vibrating. changed a bunch of parts. had it aligned again fine. took the car. still vibrating. brought it back it was a bent wheel hub. not quite sure how it got past alignment but it did. i would check that or a bad bearing.

Set up a meeting with the claims adjuster...
Thanks. Yeah I called State Farm this AM and complained again. They approved taking back to the dealer for further review.

I don't have any actual printouts of the alignment specs ... never asked for them but next will for sure. Although I do remember even looking at the machine on the Big-O system where one number stood out from the rest, no idea what I was looking at, just saw one # on the computer screen off ... I asked about it and the tech said 'well, that's still within spec, that wouldn't cause any probs, I've seen a ton of these like that no problem yada yada'

I jacked it up and spun the front wheels today, didn't notice anything obviously dragging like a caliper or anything.

Also no idea if it was the front right rim that's bent since it's now been through 3 tire rotations & balancing while they tried to get it right, but I'm definitely assuming it had to have been the original front right as I've never have had any impact whatsoever other than this incident.

Front right strut was not replaced ... it's still pretty new, no leaking or anything, had them done a while ago when the leaking XREAS was replaced with Bilsteins.

Thanks for the info. The more I think about it, if the impact was hard enough to bend the rim, it had to have done something else. So bent hub was the solution to that problem? I'll def. have the stealer check the hubs and bearings. How about the steering, were any adjustments needed there as well? And did he have any pull? My wheel is 3-4 degrees to the left now, driving straight. Then when up to speed the vibration kicks in and wants to pull to the right, about 10 seconds of letting go = right hand lane change @ 65. I was thinking maybe steering stabilizer but 4th gens don't have one, so if it's steering maybe gotta be a prob with the rack, but the wheel bearing/hub theory sounds more likely no?

BTW it gets worse, I'm kinda liking these Michelins for the ride (less the obvious vibration problem), but closer look at the rims now shows Costco may have jacked me - 3 out of 4 rims have nasty scratches/gouges after I insisted they rebalance the tires via lug-centric adapter instead of the cone dealio they were using UGH UGH UGH!! I'll start another thread for that...

if the wheel is off center. that should have beencorrected in the alignment. it could be a bent outer tie rod or inner tie rod. i have seem them hit hard enough that it shove the tie rod in and jumps gears in the rack to cause the wheel to go off center. usually i tie rod doent cause a vibration. i would definenitly call the insurance company and try to get this settled.

Update: back to dealer yesterday. Service Manager took the time to listen to the entire story and felt my pain. Promised to check everything thoroughly, but insisted they gotta start with a rebalance and realignment (the dealer was the only place that didn't take a crack at the alignment yet)

Realigned, toe was way out of whack. Steering wheel off is now fixed.

Then they road-force balanced on the Hunter 9700 ... brand new tires were completely out of balance, wrong weights used (e.g. multiple smaller weights used on some of the wheels where they should've probably used one heavier weight, etc... so the weight distribution would've never been right), at least that's what the dealer said.

NO bent rim as Costco claimed, that one balanced out fine on the 9700. I attached the alignment specs & service writeup.

Low and behold, super smooth at all speeds now, and the pull is gone. :trophy: My baby is back to life! :D

So bottom line, my lessons learned

1) I guess nobody from the get-go could get the BFG's balanced right. Possible they may be cupped a bit since I did drive them for a little while on leaking XREAS b4 swapping out w/Bilsteins, maybe that was part of the tire prob, who knows ...

2) Don't believe a word any of the tire shops or others say about balancing these wheels/tires - if it's not done on the Hunter GSP9700 with road-force, it'll never get right.

3) Inspect your rims carefully - here's the number the Costco guys did on mine... so I've got some complaining to do there now :ybrick:...

AT LEAST... I have my vehicle back and it drives right now, so aside from the rim mess I guess I'm finally a happy camper.

Those Hunter machines are nice, love the one at work, can balance anything on it. Sorry to hear about your wheels, bigger tires are sometimes a pain in the ass to balance, but if you know what you are doing its far from impossible.

Glad to hear you got it fixed! It makes a difference having a "good" tech work on it. Especially when it comes to alignments. Even then, sometimes, it takes a couple trys to get the vehicle not to pull while still being in spec so the tires don't wear bad. Alignments are not a "one size fits all" deal. This is really true after hitting a coyote then going off the road.

No doubt those Hunter Road Force machines are nice. Sometimes thats the only way to go. As far as the BFGs, I've had numerous sets of BFGs, on various vehicles, and all but 1 set has had balancing issues. Kind of why I went with the 'kooks on the 4runner. My current set of BFGs on my silverado changes the balance dramatically when I air them up to haul or tow something heavy.
