I'm still undecided on which SUV I want to purchase (or lease...?). The 4Runner V6 Sport is right there though. Another one i'm strongly considering.....hang on.....is a Nissan Xterra Off Road pkg..

Is there a real good forum dedicated to Nissans that might provide quality info....? I find Nissanforums.com to be quite useless, they simply don't get alot of hits, at least it's no wheres as good as this forum.

A few months ago I had a choice of buying a lower mileage and cheaper nissan xterra, or a higher mileage and more expensive 4runner.

I ultimately chose the 4runner. Part of it was tips from friends that say Nissans suck, and others were that 4runners look 200x better than Xterras.

I am not sure I would go as far as saying they suck, nissan is not near the build quality of a Toyota. Most Japan fans consider Nissan to be the chevy of Japan built vehicles. They are not at level of Toyota or Honda.

Toyota and Nissan are very similar in build quality, they have small differences, Toyota will spend more in the exterior looks and Nissan will do the opposite and put it into the powertrain, but with some of the newer Toyotas the bodies/interiors are getting cheaper:

I've owned both, have friends that own either and both are good high mileage typical routine maintenance vehicles.

Neither have problems except for the internet BS that is 99.99% bogus

The new Xterra models are quite a bit different than the older models, even though they look the same. I am not saying they are great, I am just saying they have changed quite a bit since they first came out.

Overall the two are pretty similar rides. Reliability and resale values are where Nissan takes the hits. PM me and I'll furnish you with the CR comparison of the two if you don't alread have them. I commend your braveness for posting a Nissan question on a Toyota forum. That to me seems proof enough that you have Runner in your blood.

I mostly agree with Edge. Nissan powertrains are impressive. However, with recent Toyota offerings, i think that Toyota has caught up with Nissan/Infiniti. Difference is that Toyota offers different many different powertrains. For example, the 4.0L V6 in 4runner is totally different from the 3.5L V6 in the Avalon. Nissan, on the other hand, offers only one engine design for all their V6 models. So, all their SUVs and cars have basically the same engine with slightly different tuning.

Where i see Nissan falling really fall behind Toyota is in the interior material and design. Materials in the Pathfinder or Xterra are pathetic...very Chevy-like! However, Nissan products are less expensive so that may explain the cost-cutting on the interior.

X-Terra

The X-Terra is a decent SUV with some real off-road capabilities. It has good ground clearance and approach/descent angles vs. others in it's class.The second generation is a definite step above the first rendition.

The new models ride much better on-road than the older ones. However, they are still not even close to the 4Runner. The shorter wheelbase and heavier steering make it less comfortable on-road than the Runner, with much more road noise transmitted to the cabin. All in all, I did like it better than the new Pathfinder - go figure. As others have mentioned, Nissan's (and Infiniti' for its class) interior materials are lower in quality than those of Toyota and even Honda.

The X-Terra's six is a very nice powerplant. I also thought they were a good value for the class until I "built" an off-road model on their website. By the time I got it comparably equipped to the V64Runner SR5 model, there was very little difference in price.

It's your money and your choice so do your own research and test drive both several times - preferably on the same day and on the same terrain.

Hi all-

New Guy here! IMHO- you are comparing apples and oranges. The X is pretty utilitaririan- even in SE trim and a bit more rugged compared to 4R or Pathfinder.

That being said- the Pathy is more the comparison.

With that out of the way- I CURRENTLY own a Pathfinder- a 99.5 model SE Limited for the half year re-design. This is my first SUV, out of many domestic Sport Sedans over the years. I have 100K on it, and other than Struts/Shocks, Rotors, Tires, and T Belt- it has been carefree, and I bought it at 35K. It only has the 3.3 liter, and is pretty slow. I truly love my Pathy though, and it has been a trusty soul over the 4 years I've had it.

I want to trade it for something with more UMPH, but I do not want the newer year "old-style" Pathy's. I am looking at either a used 2005 Pathy, or a 2004-2005 4Runner. My local Nisan dealer had a 2003 Sport Edition with V8 and black cladding with 74K on it for $20K. I never would have bought it - but I should have at least driven it for comparison. I have not driven a newer Pathy yet either.

All in all though- based on my experience- I would rate Nissan right up there with Toyota and Honda for reliability(although I would probably not want a Pilot with its 4WD system).

I've been lurking for a while just checking out the action until I make up my mind what I want to do. I am not ready to buy yet- probably by July if I can stand it.

Well I own a 2003 V6 4runner SR5 and a 2005 Xterra Offroad model and feel they are really not comparable vehicles.

The 4runner is much more refined and comfortable on the road while the Xterra is more truck like. I prefer the Xterra off road due to better visablility and I love the locking rear differntial.

I enjoy both vehicles but I think you need to decide what you plan to do with your vehicle to decide which one you should choose.
