Nitto Terra Grappler 255/60/18 pros/cons

i have 265/60/18 on the runner now. i saw the terra grapplers and like them but they only have 255/60/18 and 285/65/18. i was thinking of getting 255/60/18 but is the smaller width noticable and how are these tires. i mostly drive on the street and they must be god in the snow and rain. im big on performance but go off-roading once in awile.

The tires are pretty good, not sure on the size though. I went through the same thing, I wanted the NTGs but wanted 255/75/17s. I ended up choosing the Hankook Dynapro ATMs and haven't looked back. They are excellent tires and are also availabe in an equivalent size, 255/70/18 for you. Check out the link in my sig for pics, andcheck out reviews online, they excellent.

BROOKLYN, you are talking about 10mm (3/8in) difference - this difference is NOT noticable (at least I have not noticed it).

I wanted the NTGs for my truck, but I also wanted to go up to 255/75/17, so I settled on GY Wrangler Silent Armors.

I will however get the NTGs for my wife's GX next month (after I pay the credit card bill for my tires) :

they dont make a 255/70/18.
also what will give me better performance like cornering, stability and traction.
if i get fj springs will i be able to get the 275/65/18.

If you're looking for agressive tread with all weather capability and more handling, that is a lot to ask for out of a tire. I think the NTG or the Cooper Zeon are good choices. You may want to consider upgrading to 285/60/18.

I was suggesting the Hankook Dynapro ATM's in a 255/70/18, not the NTG. Go to Discount Tire Direct and read the reviews on both, the Hankooks will have better reviews. The main reason for the switch is the size, quite a few have swiched to the same size for 17 inch wheels (255/75/17) including myself with excellent results.

im scared 285/60/18 might rub and the nitto look awesome but havent ruled out hankook .
this truck is used for everything like beach, upstate hunting and off roading trips, weddings, nights out with the wife, highway trips and snow and ice days. so whatever i get needs to serve all my needs.

Without spacers and lift, 285/60/18 may rub.. its as much about the height as it is about width with these trucks. At 31.5" it mainly becomes a question about plastic rubbing when turning and possible uca rubbing... trouble is, that size looks awesome on a 4Runner.

275/65/18 will definitely rub sans lift and negative offset wheels.

The tough part with 18's is finding the right tire in the right size. The 18" wheels are my personal favorite looking wheel on the 4Runner... unfortunately you pay for it when tire shopping.

I have the NTG (265/70/17) on my FJ, and in Moab I have issues with them in the loose sand! I almost got stuck twice. Can't speak for snow and ice days, as that is not usually a problem in Houston! However, on trails, rocks and the street they are awesome!!:thumb3:

In addition to the Hankooks I would look at the Toyo's, the close, corporate, cousin to the Terra Grappler. They have 2 very attractive sizes for you IMHO, the 255/70/18 or 265/65/18. You're in 3rd gen or 4th? I can't remember... If a third I'd lean even more towards the Toyo or Hankook in the 255. They'll look great and the 3.4L won't lose a lot of 'juice'. IMHO 285's would be a real hit when it comes mpg and acceleration.

i have an 05 with 06 limited wheels. i value performance and weather condition mostly and my little girl in it. im going to change the suspension. i bought the fj trd shocks, sway bar bushing upgrade (backorder till mid sept) and in the process of looking for fj springs. i had bad experiences last year with my yoko g53 in the snow and ice so i want to be prepared. i also enjoy a good off road trip on occasion. any advice

As far as the tire itself goes , I have had mine for about 2 months or so and have put them through ****ing pure hell !!! I have tortured the **** out of them on logging roads made from almost pure shale to mud gumbo clay and I can't find anything to complain about so far . The shale logging roads look like your driving on shredded glass and I haven't seen one cut anywhere yet . The few times it's rained here they have been fine on the paved roads and are pretty decent for noise , not really any worse than my old Michelin's were. They are also a good looking tire too . I was skeptical but they really have succeeded my expectations. I know , it sounds like a Grappler commercial , but man I've been in the tire business for 30 years and can pick any tire I want to... These really are good tires .

GOD I HATE THAT TERM! Just a note about the open countries, one of the guys wheelin with us in Moab had a number of issues on the rocks with these tires! His tires were slipping while trying to go over rocks, ledges and the sorts. I was surprised based on the fact I have never heard anyone with anything neg about these tires.

goodyear wrangler silent armor 265/60/18
hankook rt10 265/60/18
nitto terra grapplers 255/60/18 would be my first choice if it was 265
firestone dest at 265/60/18
yoko geo at (far distance from the pack only reason is price and yoko always treated me good, but there ugly)

Nitto TG vs. Hankook Dynapro AT

I have used both and can tell you the big difference between these tires is tread width. The Nitto's are almost a full inch wider than the Hankooks and are not as loud either. The Hankooks in the 4 ply on the 4 Runner almost look flat as they buldge soooo much.

The tires in the same size don't appear to be. The Nittos look like a size up easily compared to the Hankooks.
