Posted this up in the 3rd gen forum but didn't get much feedback so I figured I would post here too.

Just picked up a set of 17" Tundra Split Spoke wheels and was planning on going with a set of K02 265/70/17 C Load Tires. The K02 tire weights in right at 46lbs.

Been looking on discount tire at 285 sizes and noticed that the Nitto G2 285/70/17 P-rated version that weights in right at 45lbs. I know overall tire diameter has a effect with 265 vs 285, but the weight is so close.

Anyone had any experience with the P-rated 285 Nitto's???

Currently have the stock limited 5-stars and Copper AT3 265/75/16C. Mostly daily driving with occasional light off-road.

I had those tires in that size. From what I read the p version is pretty much a c rated for the nittos. What's your question though? They were an ok tire tbh decent in the snow. Rain was ok but tires did slip under some conditions. I now have the ko2 e rates and for my lift n stiff springs I like the e rated better. Hasn't slip on me and does better in snow n off road.

I suppose my questions is more related to weight of the tire. Right now a have a c load 265 that weights 46lbs. Looking to make the jump up to 285's and this nitto only weights 45lbs? Doesn't seem like it would be as much of a jump like going to a e-rated 285 that weights 55-60lbs. This is my daily so I don't want to kill the drivability.....

I have not had any luck with P tires and will only buy C or E - prefer C. Recently bought set Toyo OC A/t2 - saved a little weight going to LT245/75-17E at 46#.

Quick question. I'm looking at the same tires, Nitto Grappler G2 285/70/17. Nitto's website show two tire options in this size. One is the LT with a E rating and the other has no rating on the site.. Is the (285/70R17 116TI ) a C or P rating? Not familar with the P rating. Any reviews from folks with this Grappler G2 285/70R17 116T. Thanks in advance.:help:

Yes, they make a P rated 285/70/17 version. I think it weights around 45lbs a tire, which is much lighter than its E rated version. The Nittos, seem to run a bit small for a 285 compared to other brands, but I've been satisfied with them. Perform good for light offroad use, and quiet on road. No real complaints.

I have a set of the Toyo AT2s. I believe they are the same tire with different tread. IIRC Nitto is a Toyo sub-brand. The issue I have is balance. My AT2's have been universally horrible to balance. I've had 7 total tires now. Just last week I picked up a new one that Toyo replaced because the closest we could get to balancing it by matching it to the wheel was 16 ounces out of balance. And even the new one could not be dynamically balanced. Not one of the 7 tires was able to dynamically balance out well. So the only answer I have is to static balance, then add some balancing beads to hopefully keep them in check on the highway. For an AT tire - they suck at street use.

As far as weight - they're pretty light. And my MPGs were around 19mpg highway, 17 mixed. Uncorrected for height, it's not too far off the stock mpg.

I would not trade for heavy E rated tires. The Toyo's are great in the dirt. I have absolutely no complaints about off road performance from them. I've run them all over Moab and even through the Rubicon. The only flat I've had was doing high speed runs out in the desert of Utah and put a sharp rock through the center of the tread. I can't say if it was a fluke or a weakness. They were at full street pressure as well. But I've also run Imogene Pass and Black Bear on my street tires on 20" Limited wheels - so most of the trails you'll see in the 4runner are just fine on p rated tires.

I wish there were more aggressive tire options without the weight of E rated tires. Unfortunately they're generally only offered in the flotation sizes (so 33x12.5x17), which generally don't fit very well on the 4runner's front end.

So - I guess my suggestion is to go with P rated unless you have the option of 2 sets of wheels/tires. Then it's not such a big deal. I have 2 sets, and will probably replace my AT2's with mud tires and accept the E rated weight. If I were sticking with one set for everything - I'd go with P rated tires.
