Nitto Terra Grapplers vs. General Grabber AT2's

OK so I am at 80,000 miles on my 04 4runner and have really nothing but good things to say about the Terra Grapplers that I have had on for the last40,000 miles. They probably have another 3-5k left on them but since my wife drives it around with the kids and winter almost upon us, I don't want to take the chance. That said, the General's gauged my interest based on a few posts I reviewed while searching and are the same price on discount tire direct (NGT's $121) and tire rack (Generals $121). They seem to have the same look to the BFG's AT's which I kind of prefer over the Nitto's. However, why change a good thing right?

Thoughts?

Here is what I have found while doing the same type of comparisons and talking with some tire shops/gathering info from the forum. The Nitto's are a good tire and will be better on-road performance than the Generals. Everyone seems to like them and if I'm not mistaken they may have just put a 50k warranty on them. There are some concerns about the P rating, but unless you are going off roading alot than that isn't a problem.

The Generals I've heard have the old BFG treads on them and I have been told by numerous shops that they are soft and wear fast. They are also made by Continental which I personally don't care for (based on previous experiences), but that is just me. The look is great though, basically you're getting a BFG AT for much less.

Personally if I wasn't getting the BFG's I'd go with the Nitto's based on everyone's reviews here and everywhere, but just my 2 cents.
 
I would certainly consider the BFG's but they are almost double the price than the NTG's. Plus I don't do any off-roading and we don't get much snow here in Washington DC. I'm not too concerned with the 50k warranty. I mean I got 40k out of the first set and could probably get another 5k if I wanted to. Unless I can find BFG's for a dirt cheap price it looks like I am going with the NGT's again.
 
On road the Nittos outperformed the previous sets of BFGs I'd driven on so IMO I'd stick with them. BFGs don't have the margin of error the Nittos have regarding resistance to hydroplaning and I'd never consider a set of BFGs for primarily street driving ever again but if your truck will rarely see off road there might be better options but if you liked the Nittos I'd stick with them over the Generals.

Both BFGs and Nittos aren't the best for simply on-road but the Nittos are considerably better than the BFGs for pavement.

Here we go with RonM and his rant against BFG! :D Ask him what he has on now? Goodyear DuraTrac...yeah, that is a great on-road tire! (sarcasm!) RonM does not back up what he says with what he buys. :ybrick:

Anyway, i would definitely pick Nitto over General. Why? Trust. I trust a well-established brand over a smaller brand. BTW, i would consider Yokohama Geolander H/T-S also...cheap and good alternative...i would pick H/T-S over General for sure, and possibly Nittos TG.

The Generals and the Nittos have served a lot of drivers well. IMO, unless your driving needs have changed and you need the snow traction of the Generals, stick with the NTG's

General is a brand owned by Continental tire one of the biggest and most established tire co's in the world.

The AT2 uses a tread pattern similar to the original BFG all terrains. I like the fact that they carry the severe weathe rating. There a re a lot of folks here up in New England who have been very happy with the AT2. It delivers good traction and long life. The Ivan Stewat Tundra's come equipped with AT2's

I just say the truth about BFGs and they are a poor street tire and even you said the Duratracs were more of a street tire and not much different than the Nittos. BFGs have poor hydroplaning resistance but I never badmouth their off road prowess. I've driven on BFGs quite a bit and I've got over 4 years on my Nittos so I think my opinion is valid between the two but I've driven too little on the Duratracs to really give a review but so far they seem a bit better in the snow than the Nittos (hence the snowflake symbol might be showing it's worth) but the Nittos did have better dry grip when cornering hard.
Am I lying?

Thai,I at least can give a first hand opinion on all 3 tires at the moment and I live in state that sees all conditions and have driven in them for over 24 years so I'd like to think some people respect my opinion just as they respect your's.

Yes,Nittos aren't the best but as the original poster said he already had a set and liked them so why not go with them again.

Anyway, my real estate guy drives a Dodge Ram with enough horsepower and torque to launch a drone and he has the Grabbers. He also adds an industrial size snow plow: on the front just for fun makes his truck bounce with the tires.:driving:
 
Thanks for the input guys. It doesn't snow much in DC, but we get plenty of rain and periodically will take it on the beach every summer. The duratracs look pretty damned agressive. They look to be pretty pricey though. Looks like i am going to stick with the NTG's.

BTW, i have plenty of experience with Nitto TG and BFG AT KO on the same vehicle, just like you RonM. I will never buy DuraTrac because it does not fit my useage...my opinion on DT is based strictly on what Goodyear itself has rated the tire as.
 
I'm a bit sorry for parts of my post but it's been a bad week (gf had surgery and the small issue with my truck and labor disputes) and Thai can wind me up like a top but sometimes it's slow and our banter livens up these forums a bit and we keep it civil.
 
I've seen good things around here about the GenGrabbers AT2's. Saw some in strictly mud action on an old Chevy S-10 (yes there is still one on the road) he did great in the mud with them and it's pretty soggy where ever you travel here off road at the moment .

Ron , why did you switch to the GY's ?? That shocked me !! What do you think of them ? What rating did you get ?
 
Nah,I really liked the Nittos but wanted something with better bite in the snow and so far the Duratracs are impressing me and with over a foot of snow expected in Denver they'll be getting a real test. Plus I got the Duratracs for the Nitto's price through Discount Direct and I like to try something new from time to time hence how I ended up with the Nittos which did fine for over 4 Colorado winters.
I had the Duratracs off road last week and no issues these but I wasn't expecting any.
I could be a believer in the snowflake symbol after all but the Nittos weren't a slouch in the white stuff either.

Thai,the Duratracs do have more sidewall showiness but at least it's actually useable sidewall bling since they did have better grip on rocks than the Nittos did when on the trails.

I'll be getting some snow pics over the next two days.
 
From someone who has had General Grabber AT2's, I would highly recommend them. I ran them in the 265/70/16 size on my Tacoma and never had any problems with them. I sold the truck to my dad and he still has the tires on the truck, now at 56,XXX miles and they still have tread.

I can attribute the high mileage on them to keeping up with rotations, proper inflation and normal driving. In mud they did just as well as the BFG TA/KO's and GY Wranglers i've owned. In the rain they were fine, I drove 55 miles each way, everyday, highway for the entire time I owned the truck, no problems.

Honestly, unless the person has owned them or seen them in action, I think you're going to get more negative criticism than not because they are just a "General" tire and people are going off untested "i know someone, who know's someone" stories. The only downside I found on these tires is the tire weight, they run heavier than most comparable tires in the same size...usually 3-7 lbs. more per tire. On the upside you get more tread depth with these tires.

Please post how Duratracs do for you in the snow. I'm in your neck of the woods and starting to look for new tires that will be good for all that Colorado has to offer:thumb3:
