It's a little out of my price range new. I just don't know if Toyota would have entered my mind while vehicle shopping growing up if the 4Runner had not existed.

If there was no 4runner in 2015, we would have ended up with a JK 4dr Rubicon. I dont see another US market replacement that makes sense.

Well, in 2008 it would've probably come down to a used Land Cruiser, 1st gen Sequoia, Highlander or GMC Yukon. At that time I really didn't care for any of the other offerings.
In 2014, I would've possibly considered the Tundra, a GM truck, or even a JK. The last 2 are long shots because of their questionable reliability although, I did own a 2004 Z71 that was very reliable and continues to be reliable for it's current owner. I also wanted to buy new that year so that excludes quite a few vehicles because I just can't justify paying for something that will be worth half the next year.
The problem is that the 4runner is really a niche market. There's just nothing really like it out there.

Also would consider going off the grid with an International Scout
(buddy in FL has one, a real hoot (old school with manual locking hubs) as a beach mobile with a bimini top and for mudding... essentially a bathtub on wheels like a Jeep. If something is going to leak oil I'd rather pay under 10K than over 30K for it...

Because when I bought this 4Runner I specifically wanted a new vehicle, so I assume I would still have wanted a new vehicle this time in my life had the 4Runner not existed.
But again, when I read the op, I take "sister products" to include the LC, Tacoma, and FJ.

i would (personally) not include any of the LC's outside of the 120 and 150 prado series, since all the other LC's are dramatically different.
Tacoma is a stretch, FJ definitely, hilux definitely not.
Since my 4Runner is the shared, family vehicle, I'd probably have picked up a Highlander. I have no tolerance for unreliable vehicles, so no Grand Cherokee. The 4Runner basically allows me to indulge and still be family friendly. Nothing else out there does that reliably, so I'd just give up the dream and go for pure practicality, comfort, and reliability.

With a Lexus GX460 of course. Pull out the 3rd row and take out the raised cargo floor to improve on the cargo space, add sliders and off you go. Of course it's the same vehicle as the T4R. I'd earn to live with the swing out tailgate and V8.
Almost bought the Jeep Wrangler unlimited Rubicon but I still don't like the way it looks.
Jeep GC is not an option. Reliability counts when you're miles out on the off-road trail.
No other vehicle offered today comes close. One company or another would try to fill that niche if the 4Runner was no longer made.

Up until a few years ago, my answer would have been "Pathfinder" or "Pilot", but those two have become minivans IMO.
Since I only 'prefer' (vs 'need') many of the 4R's more rugged attributes, I'd be satisfied with an SUV style of vehicle, but reliability is a must.
I could see an RX350, maybe an MDX, and the new XC90 just knocks my socks off.
I can't think of any "Big Three" that I'd even look at.
You and 1engineer need to run off an play among yourselves :$....
