no compression number3 cylinder

hello all this is my first post have been working on my boss's 96 4runner he did compression test no compression on number 3 cylinder only so i thought ok burnt valve no biggie so he started to take it apart pulled valve cover off removed the cap on the cams and on the intake side the very first jurnel is destroyed you cansee where metal has been pulled from the jurnels so i know he needs a new head but when removed the head i did not see and burnt valves on number 3 turned head upside down made it level and sprayed wd40 in the chamber and no leaks nuber 3 piston has no damage on it and no scoring on the cylinder walls either im stumpped heres a thought is it possiable that something on the cam was holding the valves open and when we took the cams out what ever was on the cam dropped of and let the valves close? please help dont want to put new engine in if we dont have to :help::cry::wtf: it has the 3.4 with auto trans and it was making a clacking noise

If the journal was destroyed from lack of oil, you probably have damage in the lower end as well. My guess is that if your valves are ok, you probably have a broken ring. Drop the oil pan and pull that one piston to look at it and to check for debris in the pan
