No cost upgrade to JBL 6 disc head unit

I am replacing my JBL 6 disc changer head unit (56836) in my 2005 Limited and am installing an E7006 NAV unit. I will be changing the LED's from green to amber to match my dash. My dash surround bezel is specific to the JBL changer unit. Ironically, the NAV unit needs the same dash bezel as the JBL single disc radio.

I would like to make a good trade to anyone who would like to upgrade their JBL single disc radio to the JBL 6 disc head unit:

--You send me your single disc radio bezel (55405-35340) from any 2003-2009 4WD vehicle. Must be in pristine condition.

--Sell your old radio on eBay!

--I will give you my JBL 56836 6 disc changer radio and its specific bezel!

Please note that this must be from a 4WD vehicle. You must also have a digital amp (2005 and newer, I believe) to use this JBL head unit. You can add a new amp for around $300 from oemvalue.com if you don't have one.

Don't forget, if you change the trim piece that surrounds the radio, you will also need to replace the climate controls. I believe I remember somebody had actually just ordered the housing for them since that was all that is different.

Sorry - I don't have any part numbers or have the link. But you definitely have to replace it. I've had both set-ups since mine had the 6-disc originally. I installed several different OEM navs in my truck in the last couple years. I started with the 7006, then got a 7007, then the 7008.

Also, instead of replacing the leds, you may be able to replace the entire face piece from an E7005, I believe. I know this can be done with the newer 5th gen navs. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to with the older ones. The following link has info regarding this that you may find helpful.

Thank you for your response, A/V 1. This is great information! After I posted my thread, I re-read the link I had referred to and had already discovered the AC contol issue. It looks like I may have to change out the AC control bezel also. A new AC control is around $800, so that is not a good option. Did you try the non-changer radio surround bezel with the changer style AC controls? Did the radio bezel fit the top and sides, but just leave a gap at the botton of the NAV unit? If so, did you try to fabricate a filler piece? There is a post in this forum with plans for a filler piece to cover all the gaps on the changer bezel, but I'm not sure how slick it would look. It would seem that the bottom gap would be the easier to fabricate. I'll check with my dealer about buying the AC control bezel only. A junkyard is another option, but I would have to find a Limited without the changer, which might be hard.

I greatly appreciate the LED advice. I know that some late 2005 4Runners used the E7008. Was the E7005 the other unit that was originally used in the 2005? I just put in an email to United. This was a great tip!

Know its old post but original poster said 2005 up uses a digital amp which is different than the one in a 2003 (and he says 2004). I have 2003 and thats what has stopped me from getting a used OEM Nav for mine (and the rediculous cost of the current map DVD). I'd like later NAV that supports XM and MP3 CD and Ipod input. Have that capability but just too many wires and 'm sure it attracts unwanted eye when parked. So does 2003 (and 2004) use an analog amp or is it just a different amp. Know amp is on the sub-woofer housing in rt rear side panel but haven't taken it apart.

03/04 also used a "digital" amp that does all of the signal processing functions in the amp instead of in the head unit, just like the later models. I would expect the pinouts to also still be the same. I would guess the difference is when MP3 playback was added. Since all of the other signal processing is done in the amp unit, the MP3 decoding probably is, too. If MP3 playback was introduced with the 2005 models, you have your answer; I know the '03s are not MP3 equipped, but I'm not sure about '04.

pretty sure MP3 playback was added on 2006 models.
