No go over 55 MPH

Can anybody give me suggestions why my 95 4runner won't break 55 ? Having buyers/restorer remorse.

Rebuilt ATK 3VZE
New fuel pump, filter, reconditioned fuel injectors.

I smoked the intake only leak was EGR diaphragm which I replaced.

About ready to give up the ghost, fighting with issues for a year now .

Any bodies input is appreciated

How does the engine feel in the lower gears? Does it pull hard in 1st and 2nd gear? Any issues at all throughout the rpm range?

Are you using OEM spark plugs?

I know from experience these engines only and I do mean ONLY like OEM plugs.

NGK Copper may help your problem.

SV Dude it does seem to shift harder in first and second. I adjusted the throttle cable. The kick down cable I can't find adjusting instructions I'm my crappy chilton manual. I am going to try messing around with that today.

Man dude this is so frustrating because even though the car is 20 years old the inside looks brand spanking new, the paint is dull from the
sun but with a new paint
Job it would look very close to showroom looks.

RiFF yes they are NGK, I even replaced the ones that were only a year old. Thanks for trying to help!

Is it an auto trans? Maybe something wrong there. Now when you say it wont break 55 does it lose power around that speed or does it struggle to get acceleration all the time?

91 it is a automatic, I adjusted the kickdown cable an I was able to get up to 70. It is still sluggish and idles at about 500. Does not miss it just feels like your trying to pull a freight train

The Toyota dealer in Houston won't even work on it because its a 95 and they can't hook up a scanner. The mechanics now days can't troubleshoot anything. They do what the computer tells them to do.

I'm almost going to give up the ghost. Sad thing is is this 20 year old 4runner looks brand new inside body is great except for sun fading the paint. If I can't find someone local that knows what they are doing I guess I'll just part it out. God knows you can't fin a part in the junk yard for it!

Wow super lame! Guess that is standard with today's young mechanics that go to school instead of learning the trade from experience or the elders. Don't be getting rid of that 4runner yet if its in good shape.

Could be just the auto trans is sucking the power from the car. Rear diff Ratio ok? Ignition timing in spec? Good air/fuel ratio?(check fuel pressure at rails too) any CE codes?(not that the codes in early OBD1 narrow anything down)

Maybe if you feel up to the task, swap to a manual trans or rebuild/find a auto with less miles. You said that the motor had been rebuilt so if the rebuild is good(and everything I mentioned above is good) its got to be a trans. problem. Oh by the way any aftermarket mods done to the runner?
