Always remember that even if off, cell phones and any other high frequency wireless device can be found from hundreds of yards away - It works the same way as a tuning fork. The cops now have a tool that emits a pulse of wireless energy, and this causes nearby antennas to resonate at their natural harmonic frequency (just like a tuning fork). The device emits a series of pulses and listens for this resonance, and will point right at a phone, even if it's off and the battery is out. Granted, it won't identify the phone, i.e. read its serial number, but it will know that a phone/wifi device/etc is there.

I'm an electrical engineer, with a background in RF propagation (RADAR specifically) and this is just nonsense. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

And even if it did work, what good would it be?

I'm blaming them for whipping things into a frenzy. They've been screaming about nonsense for the last 7 years. The fact of the matter is the Republican party has been taken over by extremists who've been calling themselves "Conservatives" until now, when they can no longer hide behind that term. There's nothing Conservative about Trump. He's a wannabe strong man who will piss on the Constitution (including the 2A) in a second whenever it suits him.

And for the record, I think Hillary is a POS, but Trump is dangerous. A draft dodger born with a silver spoon in his mouth isn't fit to be Commander and Chief of our military.

The Republicans have all but guaranteed Hillary the Whitehouse by putting up Trump. There are millions of people in this country who, like me, would have voted for anyone but Hillary...except Trump. You've put up a candidate who's going to lose to the least popular Democratic presidential candidate in modern history. Nice work! :crazy:

im not sure if you remember(sarcasm), but there have been several shootings recently, done by registered democrats. and immediately the democrats came out and blamed the republicans, and the NRA.

also, I DID quote where you blamed the republicans. it was mostly tongue in cheek, though it apparently struck a nerve..

they are not to blame, at least not solely. there is plenty of blame to be spread around, to both parties, and those in between.

Being a police officer is completely different to this aspect of the FBI. There is no comparison to the complexity and sensitivity on much of what the FBI does versus police matters. Little things like interrogating Saddam Hussein, convicting governors and senators and the Enron "too big to fail" investigation. It aint a parking problem, officer. 1No one said that Jim Comey is a prosecutor, and it is standard procedure for the FBI to include recommendations regarding prosecution when forwarding an investigative report to the DOJ/US Attorney. I was hoping Hillary would be charged too, but if Comey says its not warranted, i go with that.

Excuse me, "aint a parking problem, officer"??? Please feel free to put your law enforcement credentials out on the table (or send me a private message) that makes you think you somehow have a heightened level of knowledge about my job.

Conducting an investigation is no different between what I do and the FBI; the only difference is the size/scope of the FBI's investigations. Moreover, there is also no difference in collecting evidence that meets the elements of a crime -- whether it is federal or state criminal charge.

Have your opinion -- we are all allowed to -- but watch your tone so you don't come across as an arrogant @ss.

You left out complexity and sensitivity when trying to explain the difference between police investigations and FBI stuff. I dont need to bona fides myself to you, lets just say decades of experience at a high level in something more complex than being told where to respond byva dispatcher. Here's my understanding of the technology that can supposedly detect the presence (and direction) of a wireless device, even when turned off:

It emits a signal, whether this is swept or some broadband signal is unknown to me but I assume it would be swept across cell carrier frequencies. A phone transceiver has an antenna tuned for a particular center frequency. My assumption is that this locating technology measures either reflection or absorption at the frequencies of interest.

I know little about this other than there are (once again, supposedly) several vendors with prototypes and I believe that one is L3 communications - The same company that sells devices such as the RANG-R which is the handheld device that can track subjects thru non-metallic walls.

With an unlimited budget, some nice RF hardware and some spicy DSP + FPGA, a lot is possible - More every day. With the radar background, maybe you can shed some light on how the direction of a tuned resonant circuit could be located? Assuming that the antenna is essentially tied to an MMIC which maintains 50Ohm impedance when off, then I think that detection would be achieved by measuring absorbption, correct? Do you think this would be feasible? It really fascinates me but I just don't know enough about RF to try to experiment with something like this.

Anyway, with regards to what good would it be... If it did work, and could be used to detect the proximity of a wireless device within a reasonable distance, then it would certainly be very useful for locating a cellular device which has been discarded by a subject. Subject involved in criminal enterprise -> Gets chased by cops -> Discards evidence-containing phone while fleeing -> Cops quickly locate phone by following chase route with this locating device. I assume that this is the exact reason for law enforcement interest in such technology.

And sorry for not staying on topic here. I know that the subject of this thread is about how the laws of this country only apply to little people.
