No Lights in Trip Computer Screen

Hey All,

I've read through all the posts I could find relating to swapping out the bulbs for LEDs and replacing the stock bulbs in the center console, however I still haven't been able to figure out what's going on with mine.

Specifically, I pulled my trip computer out and removed the two bulbs which are housed behind the screen. To the naked eye neither of them appears damaged and every other bulb in that cluster works (fan controls, vent controls, defrost, recirculation, airbag, mode and reset). Here's a picture of what mine looks like (sorrry about the poor quality; I had to leave the flash off to show the lights):

Any idea what could be causing just the screen not to light up?

Thanks for posting. Same problem started for me a few days ago. I'm interested to seeing the responses. A search gave me a post but hope for more info. From the post, since I have to take part of the dash off I'll replace all the bulbs that I can get too. Do you have a link for a post on how to remove the center console to change those lights?

The bulbs are probably burnt out, even though they look fine to the naked eye. Try replacing them, they're cheap. I just did mine this past weekend.

In the pic above, it also looks like your bulb for the "Reset" and "Mode" buttons is burnt out too.

Very odd, because when I first took these pictures today those lights were out, however after I put everything back together this is what I saw:

Maybe the contacts were bad or something...

I'd second just changing out the bulbs ... I didn't actually check my old bulbs to see if they looked like they were burned out, but putting new bulbs in did the trick. Nice to be able to see my display again ...

Nice! You might want to get a new bulb for the "Mode" and "Reset" buttons anyways and replace it while you're back there, no telling how long it will be before it goes out again.

FWIW, my half of my display was flickering on and off for about 6 months--if I hit it the right way it would stay on for a while, but then it finally went completely dark. It was the only bulb out, the rest were fine (other half of the screen, HVAC controls, etc.). Not sure if the contacts were bad or if the filament inside was just loose, but just replacing the bulb did the trick. The bad bulb looked fine when I held it up and compared it to the new bulb, no obvious signs of damage.

Thanks for the great link. Mine have been dimming out for a while. If your 4Runner is a few years old this is bound to happen.

Had the same exact problem and just changed the bulbs behind there. I thought my display was broken and was relived when such a simple fix alleviated the issue. The only issue is I always break one of the HVAC bulbs when removing the piece.

Took mine in to dealer 2 times to fix the issue and everytime the bulbs would go out so I just gave up trying already.:gun5:

Yeah, I ordered two new bulbs last week and they arrived over the weekend while I was out of town. I just finished putting them in and the trip computer screen is fully illuminated again.

Unfortunately, replacing the backlight bulb on the left side of my LCD didn't do the trick. I still have half the LCD backlight out. That said, replacing the bulbs on the other cluster items did the trick. Dang it.

Yeah, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but the stupid lights went out again. I replaced them with LEDs a few days ago and they still didn't work. Then, when driving late last night, I looked over and BOTH sides were working. I was all pumped! Well, I get in my car this morning while it was still dark and they both weren't working...again. Arg! It's either a short in the connector or the stupid contacts are worn down. I will have to see about either restoring electrical contact of the gold edge or running jumper wires from the other lights. We'll see. Just need more time...

The info lights are 6v. If you use anything other than stock bulbs then there’s 2 issues you can run into. 1, being a 12v bulb instead of 6v, or 2. Having polarity switched. Based on what you say where they’re intermittent, I’d say volts maybe? Try picking a set of OEM bulbs and see if they work. Then you can troubleshoot further.

Strange as I ordered the NEO4's from SuperBrightLEDs...the same ones everyone else has purchased. What gives? Dang it. The lights that were out were/are the two for the multifunction display (trip computer, clock, mileage, etc). So frustrating.

I just looked at superbright and at least the neo4’s I looked at said 9-14v. Which means the 6v isn’t supplying enough juice. Hence the intermittent working I’m guessing. You can try swapping the bulb so the contacts swap sides, Incase you do have the posneg side switched, but don’t think that’s the problem since they worked for a min.
