Agreed. I definitely like the identity differences between the trim models. But I still think it should be allowed to be "ordered" that way from Toyota. Much like color. I can understand that the "pearl white" is reserved for the LE, but if I wanted to order my TE that way, I should be able to.

Again, I know the 4Runner market isn't designed for us 1%ers. Life is full of compromises so I guess I'll just install my ARB locker and shut up.

In regards to the 3rd row usage. My kids are still under 10yo. We have used it numerous times throughout all the friends and family visiting us. Even my wife and my SIL were using it during the multitude of winery visits. I'm sure the wine helped with the compact sardine feeling, but they still rode in the back for 30-45min jaunts. They had the 2nd row moved forward slightly and that gave them a decent amount of leg room. Of course my wife and SIL are about 5'6 so that helped too.

At any rate, the 3rd row has worked for me and my family. It definitely beats having to drive 2 cars when you're wine tasting.
 
Another Oddball Here

I too would not hesitate to buy a TEP with a 3rd row. I don't need the additional off road capabilities of the TE, except in the rarest of circumstances, but am trying to find a workable option that satisfies my needs as well as those of my family. I like trucks and don't want to veer too far into family hauler territory or else I'd just get a Highlander, but I know that my wife may drive it once in a while and the 3rd row will make things much easier with the kids and all.

What I need is a truck that works for lots of tooling around in the Appalachians, for skiing, fishing, and hiking. It is likely to be a DD of sorts, but I don't like the look of the LEs at all. Feels like I'm going to need to work on the truck to get it to be what I want, no matter what, which is totally okay with me. I would just prefer to work on the suspension than on a facelift.
 
Same here. The TE would have better suited my needs/preferences in all areas except that it could not be optioned with the 3rd row seats.

Not a big fan of chrome.
 
I had my heart set on a TE-P.
Wife had her mind set on 3rd row = more room than the FJ, but a TE-P non-3rd row was same space as FJ.
Had there been a 3rd Row option on TE-P, we both would have been happy.
Settled on a SR5-P with 3rd row, I'm happy, but am spending [more] money than I would have on aftermarket, had I been able to get the TE-P in 3rd row.

for the intended purpose, your not going to haul 7 people when your on the trails.

and the TE's come with a sliding tray, so you can slide your gear out to get to it easily.

if you want to haul people get a LE w/ 3rd row or if you cant afford a LE get a SR5 w/ 3rd row. Toyota covers 99% of the scenarios that people want. those 1% which are probably on this forums are not what Toyota caters to.

What percentage of time do you think TE owners spend on the trails vs commuting/running errands/daily life stuff? 1%? 2? For me, and dare I say most considering a 4Runner, having the 3rd row for kids is awesome. I have a 100-series with 3rd row and it gets used frequently. Also, I'm out on the trails regularly with family/friends and the kiddo's in 3rd row. Cargo on the roof and we're good to go. It's a great OPTION to have.

Like many of the posters, I really wish Toyota would incorporate the 3rd row option on the TE's.
