Been moving and towing a pretty heavy trailer, the constant downshifting of the trans is driving me nuts, we dont have an od off button do we?

Yea.

Def don't tow in 5th if it causing your transmission to hunt a bunch. That is a number one way to destroy your transmission early.

I would change your fluid.

I think the manual explains what gear to be in when/etc. Give it a quick read for reference.

As mentioned, when towing, just throw her in ''4'' which is just to the left of ''D''. Unless you have an 03 or 04 v6 with the 4 speed auto.

From my understanding, the torque converter will still be allowed to ''lock'' in ''4'' and of course ''D'' (which is ''5'').

As a reference, even when not towing, mine basically only goes in ''D'' if I'm consistently going over like 45 mph and not a lot of hills. Its pretty hilly in Western PA. She typically just gets thrown in ''4'' more my around town driving, which is most of my driving.

Yea. Torque lockup is different from the gearing. Toyota designed lockup to happen in both 4th and 5th, I would imagine, to help specifically with towing. In 4th, you still get the lower power band needed for heavy towing and the 5-10% added MPG efficiency you get from torque lockup once at highway speed. When it locks up, it essentially acts like a solid drive line and eliminates the energy loss that occurs via the fluid connection.

thanks alot guys, i figured it out. never towed anything heavy enough where it couldnt do it on the hw in 5th.

It should go into lockup as early as 2nd gear depending on fluid temperature, engine load and throttle position.

No, the A750f does not fully lock in 2nd gear. There is flex-lockup in all gears which uses various hydraulic pressures in the TC to improve efficiency and shift smoothness. The A750's will only completely lock in 4th and 5th.

Is this a woven carbon converter clutch with a PWM control strategy? I have never rebuilt a toyota transmission... I guess that's a good thing :)
