No power PLEASE HELP

4WD 4RNR

New member
I have a 06 4wd 4runner sport edition and for the last two weeks i have had problems accelerating. If i stop at a light or get off the highway and need to accelerate there is no power, Fells like Im towing a huge trailer or like if its in 5th gear. Its not the tranny im sure of. If i put in neuteral and rev it the engine stuggles to create rpms. The truck has 85k and the only mod i have done was a drop in k&n. I did like evertone else has told me and yes I took it to the stealership. They did a test drive and said its fine, i complained and they did another drive, still same answer. I would greatly appreciate help that anyone can give me. Thanks in advance, David

Maybe you can take it to another dealer or a shop that's good with Toyotas. If they tell you the same thing take it somewhere to get dyno tested to see what its putting out. Could also be a bad tank of gas.

What happens if you put it in 1st and then start off. Is there power?

The key I'm seeing is the drop in filter. The oil on the filter can get sucked into the maf meter and throttle body. Clean the maf and throttle plate and then drive it.

Thanks for the replys everyone, and Im staying away from the dealerships, simply cuz they suck here in jacksonville fl. Im Hunting for a good shop just to have it looked at. Plugs have not been done, planned on doing it real soon along with the timming and tranny service. The first gear trick doesnt work, tried it. Far as the oil on the k&n it sounds like a good call. Im going to clean it today if time allows. Hope that solves it.

Has anyone had any problems with the dropin filters? Just spoke with someone about 4runner and he seems to think it the K&N messing up the maf.

Never had a problem with my K&N which I've ran for the majority of my 4R's life. Just cleaned my MAF sensor and it looked immaculate, but after reading about possible fouling issues here, I've recently switched to the aFe dry this past weekend.

When I bought my Land Cruiser from a dealership it had trouble accelerating. After the dealer spent a lot of time and money (theirs) trying to fix it, I took it home and found the crank case way overfilled. The crank was hitting the oil and when I accelerated it got much worse. I would take the truck to an independent mechanic, they would charge you but at least they would be looking for a problem.

Nice find.
Mention the K&N to him.

The oil can be sucked thru and stick to the MAF and then dirt to the oil. I ran one for years but recently tossed it. My intake tubes were filthy. I don't know how the dirt is getting in but I'm sure it is around the filter.

I had the filter oil issue once and K&N told me to clean the filter and OIL SPARINGLY!

Still having issues with not having power at times. The mechanic I took the truck to is puzzled all because theres no engine light. He say that I have to wait for the ecu to throw a code all readings are good. Also I took the truck back to the dealer i bought it from and they said the same thing, Sorry theres no code and it runs fine. they could not duplicate the problem. What should I do. I really dont want to sell it

is there anything you did under the hood right before this started? did you put in the filter and it lacked power the next time you drove it? did you knock off a vaccuum line or something?

Are you riding in the car with the service tech and recreating the problem? He may just be running you in circles. If he doesn't "feel" your issue, they never admit they're wrong, test drive another 4th gen on their lot with the same service tech in there and see if that other car has the same issue.

Sorry for sending you back to the stealership as an option, but that option is more thorough than option two below:

Option 2) Take out the k&n and go back to OEM or equivalent see if the issue goes away...

If you do go back to the dealer there is a test they can do specifically for the maf.
Have them pull up the data list on their techstream. Create a list with just rpm and Calculated Load %. Perform stall test. If the calculated load doesn't go straight to 100% the maf is reading wrong and should be replaced.
Most techs don't even know they can do this unless they've gone to the advanced engine controls class Toyota has.

The 4th gen 4Runner has a electronic throttle. Make sure that the plus for it is all the pay plugged in. My 03 V8 did the same thing a few months ago and I just plugged it all the way back in and all was good from there.

What area are you in? I'm in Pittsburgh and it seemed like the first hot day, my Runner was a DOG... Its like the temp jumped up so high, so fast that the computer needed time to adjust to the difference in air density via the maf?

Just my theory. A/C doesn't help either, but it was more significant than the little power the a/c needed.

Anyway, sounds like yours is more/something else. Curious to hear the result. Keep us updated.

I did ask if they would send a tech with me for another test run so I could dupilcate the problem. Their response truck runs great theres no need to do another test. I got angry and told the service manager, Listen im the owner and I know when somthings not right. He replyed even if theres a problem wat am i shooting for. Theres no codes. I walked out. So if i remember correctly the truck did run a lil different when i put the k&n. Im got back to stock filter and cleaning the maf. Oh and its Hot Hell here in Florida.
