no power steering

HI I am new here . I have a 2003 sport - v8 . Sometimes I have power steering and sometimes not . I would like your opinions . My hometown mech. says valve in rack is sticking . What is your opinion , and is there anything I can do outside of replacing rack ? THANKS

Any update on this? I just bought a used '03 v8 limited 4x4... had a very heavy steering wheel. Flushed the PS fluid and the old stuff was really really nasty. The first 10 days after the flush, no change. But, today it started working like brand new PS again. I'm wondering if it's a cure or a fluke ....
