No power when pushing pedal down??

Hi all. 2001 w/ 240,000.

I make the drive up to the Bay Area from Southern CA usually once a month. I noticed recently on these trips that after I let off the gas and then gas it again on freeway there will be no power whatsoever for about three seconds and then you can feel the power kick in and engine make noise. It's concerning given I will drive up/down in the early morning hours (2AM etc) and don't want to get stranded.

I have not been able to replicate this problem just driving around freeways here, and it only seems to happen on long trips up and down from there. Does it with both AC on and off. Most recently I felt it when I was in first gear from a stop. No power, happened three times that day and that was it. Mechanic has no idea, said let it get worse.

Any ideas? Other than this, running beautifully!

There are different things that can loss of power pull the codes and start from there. But if it's Throttle position sensor. I Just saw some one who found one that worked for 65.00. A factory one will cost about 1300.00 2001 and 2002 have a 4 wire TPS which is different from older models.

Found it. So for $65 I can replace it and not pay the $1300 that I'm reading about? If so how difficult is it to replace?

Tps is easy to get to the where the throttle cables come into it's on the fire wall side of the Throttle body. There is a plug and 2 screws there is some adjustment on the sensor you can do a little trial and error until it runs smooth I'm not sure of the exact procedure. I would try to determine the try cause of of power loss.:boom:

If it is a throttle position sensor search the threads I thought I read something about taking out of OD in the Transmission allows you to drive it also something about with the engine off pushing the throttle up and down a few times maybe able to clear the bad spot temporarily. I have not had this problem so good luck:mod:

Almost sounds like a dead spot in the TPS... that's an odd one. Double check the wiring to the throttle body and all grounds are clean and secure. Since it's 100% drive by wire, it's either a wiring or sensor issue.

Hey all. My mechanic found (and ordered) the “hard to find” TPS that ends in ‘30’ NOT ‘20’. I showed up there today and we verified it is indeed a four pin sensor

My reason for posting is - there appears to be two sensors in the photo (circled in red). He said the one on the left does NOT come off unless you replace the whole throttle body, but the one on the right he CAN replace (with the four prong).

Which is the one that usually needs to be replaced? I didn’t know there was two, so I told him to hold off until I find more info. Debating on having him replace the whole throttle body since the sensor that could be out might be the non-removable one on the left???

I think he might be right about having to replace the TB
I have a 1999 and you can easily remove the TPS, no problem, but I think the 01 and 02 TB is a whole different animal due to the drive by wire.
Maybe an 01 or 02 owner can chime in?



Now, those do also sound like fuel pressure issues. I had the same basic symptoms at 2 different times (bad fuel pressure regulator and bad fuel pump)
With the FPS, the RPMs would cut out while driving and often come close to stalling, and then regain by itself. This was random, but replicatable by flooring it.
With the fuel pump, it would often start hard stumble and would not do ANYTHING even if I had the gas pedal floored. It was a weird feeling; you'd think that the RPMs would raise, but nothing happened. This would last for a couple minutes until the pressure rose. I just kept a can of starter fluid, just in case. Other than that, it drove great. Plenty of passing power, good MPGs, no stalling.

if you have the right part in hand it should be easy to match up but. From the picture what I can see it's the one on the right and on the car it's the once closest to the firewall. I would try and look back to earlier threads someone replaced the TPS and said it worked the part in the picture is pretty expensive. I would try and use the sensor you have if the parts look the same and see what happens.:happy:

I have a problem with my runner I’ve changed throttle body with a brand new one from Toyota. Because I only get throttle at the bottom half of my pedal! The guy who owned this car before me reversed the battery terminals. I went through every fuse changed them all still to throttle till half way tb is brand new so everything it’s good on it but I need help!!!

I'm assuming you have an 01 or 02? If so, the throttle body is not working - you will have to figure out where/what is wrong. The failsafe is basically that the electronic throttle control has a 'limp mode' where the cable can take over. There may be issues with fusible links or maybe something was damaged by the reverse voltage before the fuses blew.
