No Power

We have a 2000 T4R TRD Limited. The engine runs fine. Sometimes, but not all the time, when we put it in drive and give it some gas, the engine revs but very little power to the wheels (like the clutch is slipping). The exhaust gives off black smoke like an air/fuel mixture issue. If we put it into 1st gear, there is power to the wheels but still a slight exhaust smell. We can drive it and shift into 2nd then Drive, but come to a stop in Drive and the engine will stall. This can happen if the engine is warm or cold. But out of the blue, we'll start it and it works fine for a while. There are no engine codes. It sounds like it could be a short or a faulty sensor, but you would think that we would get a code. I've seen similar posts here but no answers. Has anyone come across this and found a cure? Help!

might look into hooking up a real time scanner and view what the engines vitals are. ex scanner or ultragauge or scangauge

As Shootmymime suggested get a real time scanner. Im suspecting a faulty TPS. I had one go bad on my just after I had a transmission rebuilt. Im thinking that the TPS is sending a signal to the ECU and you trans in staying in 4 gear and keeping the TC locked. My first issue was that when I was driving, my trans would down shift from 4th gear or wouldnt shift into 4th gear. After 2 weeks of gong through wiring diagrams and a process of elimination, I narrowed it down to the TPS. I ran down the street to Advance, and grabbed an aftermarket TPS since they happened to have the part in stock. I knew I had fixed the issue when I realized that my trans wasnt down shifting into first gear after driving it, an issue similar to yours. I then ordered a TPS from one of the online parts dealers and will never use aftermarket for toyota sensors.

I also would like to add that the CEL never came on once for the TPS issue. It came on for my o2 sensor but not the TPS.
